12-Year-Old Found Special Needs Twins Drowning in Tub After ‘Loving and Caring Mom’ Allegedly Left Them Alone

Police in Virginia made a sad discovery on April 17, 2026. During a call to a Richmond residence, they found twin 17-month-old boys unresponsive in a bathtub. Though EMS rushed the boys to a nearby hospital, they both ultimately died. Police arrested their mother, 21-year-old Amaya Dixon, on murder and neglect charges in connection with their deaths. More than a month later, Dixon’s family has spoken out in defense of the young mother. Loved ones claim Dixon loved and cared for her sons, and that their deaths were a tragic accident.

Dixon’s 12-year-old sibling reportedly found the twins in the tub.

According to court documents obtained by WTVR,  Dixon’s 12-year-old brother discovered her twins struggling in the bathtub on April 17. Dixon’s 17-year-old brother helped get the boys, identified as Ksyn and Kcye Dixon, out of the tub while the 12-year-old called 911. The boys reportedly had special needs and could not hold their heads up. Dixon allegedly told police she left the boys for four minutes to get milk. Prosecutors claim it was 15 minutes, and she failed to notify anyone she was leaving the boys alone.

Dixon’s family insists that she loved her sons.

William Smith, Dixon’s defense attorney, claims his client simply made a terrible mistake and that the boys’ deaths were “obviously unintentional.”

Ksyn and Kcye’s grandmother told reporters outside the courtroom that Richmond Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Joan Burroughs allegations were untrue.

“Amaya was a loving and caring mom. We loved those children unconditionally. We will forever hold them in our hearts,” the grandmother said.

The judge set Dixon’s bond at $20,000.

Dixon reportedly sobbed in court when the judge announced her bond, “Thank you, God,” she said. The young mother cannot serve in a supervisory role with minors as a condition of her release. Dixon’s family felt relieved that she would be out of jail, at least temporarily.

“We are thanking God that she can mourn with her family and mourn over her kids because she wasn’t able to be there for the process of burial of her kids,” the boys’ grandmother said.

Dixon will appear in court in August on fraud allegations.

The court did not set a court date for her murder and child abuse charges. She’s due in a Chesterfield County, Virginia, court in August 2026, for financial crimes. Dixon allegedly committed credit card theft, received goods and services fraudulently, committed credit card fraud of less than $1,000, grand larceny, intended to sell stolen property, obtained money by false pretense, and committed financial exploitation, per WRIC.

Dixon has a long road ahead of her to fight both her financial and murder charges. Hopefully, what her family said is true, and this was all a terrible accident. No matter what, her brothers will never forget that horrible day. But we hope they find solace in the fact that they tried to save Ksyn and Kcye’s lives.
