It’s been nearly four years since a Chinese man allegedly pushed his pregnant wife over a cliff in Thailand to collect insurance money to pay a gambling debt. Wang Nuannuan, the woman’s alias on the social media site Douyin, and her husband, Yu Xiaodong, visited a tourist spot in Thailand when Nuaannuan fell from a cliff more than 34 meters, or 111 feet. The fact that she survived is nothing short of a miracle. Sadly, the baby that she was carrying died that fateful day.
Today, Nuannuan is trying to get her life back to normal. She has spent years in physical therapy to regain the ability to do everyday tasks such as walking, all the while fighting her case to keep Xiaodong in jail, the South China Morning Post reported. Despite the physical and mental struggles, Nuannuan repeatedly proves she is a survivor.

The damage to her body was unfathomable.
Not only did Nuannuan suffer a heartbreaking miscarriage, but she also had severe injuries. This included more than 17 broken bones, many of which required at least 100 steel nails to be inserted into her body and more than 200 stitches, the Morning Post reported.
The injuries led to multiple surgeries and years of intense physical therapy. It wasn’t until the beginning of 2023 that she could even walk independently, according to the Beijing Youth Daily, the Morning Post reported.
Nuannuan had to fight to stay alive.
The injuries took an emotional toll, but she told the Morning Post that she had no choice but to keep pushing to regain the quality of life she wanted. Nuannuan didn’t want to live her life confined to a wheelchair.
“If I give up, will my body become better? Will my mental status become better? No,” she said. “So I have to hold back my tears and bear all the hardships with the firm goal of becoming a better person.”
She shared her story to help others.
Nuannuan explained that she used the social media platform Douyin to talk about her struggles. She gained tens of thousands of likes on her post. She created a dialogue between many of her followers, thanking them for their support and encouraging them on their journeys.
“Many people left messages for me. Some were in various degrees of adversity and felt at a loss,” she told the Morning Post. “They said after seeing my videos, they felt encouraged because what I endured is harder than their problems but I did not bow to fate.”
Xiaodong was reportedly a compulsive gambler.
According to the Morning Post, Nuannuan is wealthy and has many assets, which equates to millions of US dollars. She was a successful businesswoman when she and Xiaodong met in 2017. The couple married just two months after they met, and although Nuannuan continued to work, Xiaodong reportedly remained jobless, allowing her to support him.
Nuannuan said her husband had a gambling debt of more than $300,000, and he continually pressured her for more money to pay it off. He allegedly pushed her off the cliff so his inheritance could be used to settle with his collectors.
She said the time between her marriage and the fall was the worst time of her life.
'That man is not a husband, but a devil. He must receive the most severe punishment,' one commenter wrote.
When Nuannuan posted her story on Douyin, someone left this comment that seemed to sum up the man accused of trying to kill his wife. A Thai court initially gave Xiaodong a life sentence. He appealed that decision, and authorities reduced the sentence to just 10 years. Nuannuan is appealing that decision herself.
“He destroyed my world. He betrayed me. I lost my baby. I lost my health,” she said. “My career was also jeopardised. My plan for future life was also gone. My whole life was turned into debris.”
