Teen Missing for Over a Year Found Alive & Living Under an Alias Just Days After Mom Spoke Out

Asata Amun seemingly disappeared in February 2024. For more than a year, the 16-year-old’s family feared the worst. Asata reportedly ran away from her Buford, Georgia, home after her father, Kwabena Amun, threatened to send her to military school. Doorbell camera footage caught the teenager running barefoot, but no one saw her again.

On March 10, 2025 – more than a year after she went missing – her mother, Jasmine Dominique, opened up to WSB-TV about her daughter. Dominique, who lives in Connecticut, said Asata had run away in the past but had always called her. This time, she heard nothing.

“She knows my number. She could have sent me a message,” Dominique told the news outlet. The desperate mother added, “I just want to make sure that wherever she is, she’s OK. You know, she’s alive.”

Per WSB-TV, following Asata’s disappearance, child protective services removed Asata’s sister from their father’s home after receiving complaints of abuse. Amun denied abusing his children and told the news outlet, “I just want to make sure my baby girl is OK. That she is alright,” he said.

Early on in the investigation, Gwinnett County Police released information about Asata, hoping for her safe return. Weeks later, authorities released more details. “The day before her disappearance, Asata was disciplined by administrators at her school. Detectives believe that the incident may have provoked her to leave the house on the day she was last seen,” the statement on Facebook read.

“The police department previously issued a news release and social media posts about this case but have not received information leading to Asata’s location. Investigators have been working on this case since Asata’s disappearance and are asking for the public’s help for any new information,” the release added.

On March 17, 2025, police finally broke the case. Asata is safe and in the custody of the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services, where she had been since February 2024, apparently under an alias. Investigators reportedly found inconsistencies in Asata’s story that led to her positive identification.

Per police, “Arrangements have been made to transfer custody of Asata Amun to the Georgia Department of Family & Children Services. The investigation into her disappearance remains active. Detectives extend their gratitude to the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services and the La Vergne Police Department for their assistance in this case,” WSB Radio reported.

Many people shared thoughts on the police department’s Facebook page and hope authorities keep Asata safe.

One wrote, “She’s been there the whole time?!? Did she not want to be found..?! I hope she stays safe.”

This person agreed. “From what I’m reading, Hopefully she’s not placed back with either parent. She needs a positive environment,” the person commented. “She’s 16 [and] could even emancipate. I hope she gets legal support & the right people advocating for her to never be returned to either of them.”
