7-Month-Old Baby Boy Found Dead in a Lake While on a Family Camping Trip

Police are investigating the “unexplained” death of a 7-month-old baby who died at a campground area in Queensland, Australia. On Saturday, July 12, 2025, emergency services received a report indicating that a baby boy had been found unresponsive. Though the baby was taken to a hospital, he did not survive.

The tragic incident happened at Chatsworth Park, which is a campground that his family had spent the night at while on their way home, per 7News. According to the news outlet, the baby was found unresponsive in a lake. The mother reportedly pulled her baby out of the water herself.

At this time, it’s still unclear how the baby ended up in the lake. The area of the park where the incident occurred is considered a crime scene. Investigators hope that other campers who stayed at the park around the same time will be able to provide some clarity.

There were reportedly also “a lot of people just popping in to use the facilities and the parks,” according to Detective Inspector Craig Mansfield. He added that “some people have left shortly or thereabouts at the time of the drowning of this infant child.”

Currently, investigators “have part of the picture.” However, before deciding how to proceed, they “want to complete that full picture,” Mansfield explained.

According to a news release, although it’s unclear what happened, the baby’s death is being treated as a drowning. The news release also stated that the baby’s mother and father are “assisting police with enquiries.”

“We know what’s happened,” Mansfield said, per 9News. “We’re just investigating further to try and establish why and how this incident occurred.”

Mansfield also noted that the baby’s death has been “very traumatic” for the mother, especially because she was the one who pulled him out of the water. “They were just staying there overnight and, tragically, this incident has happened the following morning,” he said.
