While a family mourns the sudden death of an 11-year-old boy, police in Minneapolis, need help finding his killer. The child, identified by family in a GoFundMe as Amir Atkins, was shot and killed on June 23, 2025, around 2 p.m. Amir was at Folwell Park when gunfire broke out. Tragically, Amir suffered a fatal gunshot wound, leaving behind a devastated family.
According to a press release from the Minneapolis Police Department, witnesses reported seeing multiple vehicles in the area at the time of the shooting. A resident sitting on his porch heard cries for help and found Amir suffering from a life-threatening injury. Police said the man took Amir and another male into his car and tried to get to a hospital. He flagged down police and they attempted life-saving measures. EMS arrived a short time later, but sadly, Amir succumbed to his injuries.
“I cannot emphasize enough how terrible it is to have an 11-year-old boy shot and killed in the middle of the day,” Chief Brian O’Hara shared in the press release. “We need anyone with information to come forward so we can bring some sense of justice to this child’s family. We are following every lead, but we need the public’s help to solve this.”
Amir’s uncle, Marvin Walker Jr., created a GoFundMe for his sister to help with the 11-year-old’s funeral and final expenses. Amir leaves behind seven siblings who adore him, including one who Walker says tried to save him.
“We are devastated to announce the passing of our precious Mir Mir, who left this world far too young at just 11 years old. Yesterday, in a moment of crisis, his older brother’s love shone through as he carried Amir, seeking help,” he wrote. “A compassionate stranger then stepped in to rush them to medical care, but despite their valiant efforts, Amir could not be saved.”
Walker also shared his nephew’s story on Facebook and wanted to clear the child’s name.
“AMIR LAMAR ATKINS BABY BOY,” he wrote. “Ion never think I’d make a post like this about my family RESPECTFULLY all yall lil kids claiming my nephew slight appreciation but y’all ain’t no better he been MAYBE knowing yall a year or so. AMIR ain’t no thug, no gangsta, none of that. Just simply got attached in the wrong crowd. but I hope lil man story bring light to ALL OF YOU! This s— ain’t a game ONLY 11 YEARS OF LIFE. Amir you will never be forgotten. Streets Talk. You goin get yo JUST DUE.”
