When you’re a kid, there are a lot of reasons why you may want to disappear. Maybe you’re being bullied. Or maybe you’re having a lot of big emotions and you simply don’t know how to process them. Perhaps it wasn’t intentional, but then you got scared. Callahan Pierce, a little boy in Massachusetts, took off into the night, armed only with a backpack. No one knows why he decided to take off. After a search that lasted through the night and into the next morning, the missing boy was thankfully found in someone’s yard. We may never know what led to him leaving, but we’re glad he’s back safe.
The community moved quickly to try and find the boy.

Callahan who is just eight years old, was last seen at a home in Marshfield around 7 p.m. on March 24, 2026, Marshfield Police said in a post on Facebook. The alert prompted community members to spring into action and offer help and insight.
“He might be hiding scared that he’s in big trouble seeing helicopters and all the police,” one person commented on the post.
“I have all my lights on and cameras pointed out towards the woods and fields. I’m ready to put on a headlight and go out if needed. But I will take the advice of the local police and stay put for now,” someone else wrote.
“Talking from experience. I ran away when I was younger and once I knew there was flyers for me and police were looking for me I got scared and wanted to stay away longer. I think it would be smart to maybe find a way to say that he won’t be in trouble if he’s found,” another person shared.
Police used every resource to look for Callahan.
Marshfield Police Chief Phillip Tavares, spoke with WFXT about the boy’s disappearance, telling the news station that he was playing outside with another child while they were being watched by a babysitter. Suddenly, he walked away from where he was playing.
A massive search for Callahan took place, with police using drones, K9 units, law enforcement on the ground, a helicopter, and community volunteers to find him.
“It appears he had been traveling through the woods all night long,” Tavares said at a press conference the morning after the boy disappeared. “He hunkered down during the night. That’s why the infrared didn’t spot him. When the sun came up, he started traveling again.”
Thankfully, a man spotted Callahan Pierce, and rescued him safely.
Ben Ruggio, a 22-year-old man living in Duxbury, Massachusetts, was shocked when he woke up and found the boy on his property.
“Waking up for a cup of tea, bringing the dogs out, reading out about this kid it’s horrifying. Then look outside I thought I was hallucinating. I saw this little guy by the chicken coop. I was like, ‘woah, is this real?’” he told WHDH.
“He tried getting away from me but, you know, I had to charm him in. I gained his trust and we got eggs from the chicken coop and then got him inside. He was shivering. It was horrible seeing him shaking.”
Ruggio was able to coax the boy into the house with the offer of breakfast. Quickly, he ran upstairs to tell his mom about who was sitting in their home. “He came running into the room because he left his phone upstairs, and said, ‘I’ve got Callahan downstairs call the police,’” his mother Jackie told the outlet. Quickly, the police arrived at their home to take the boy back to his parents.
Marshfield Police provided an update on Facebook, saying the boy was “being taken to a local hospital for an evaluation after a night in the cold. He will be reunited with his family there.” They also thanked the community for their help.
