Chicago Couple Scrambles To Plan Wedding After Violence in Mexico Forces Destination Wedding Cancellation

Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” was the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of Mexico’s fast-growing illegal drug operations. Mexican special forces killed the notorious leader on February 22, 2026, leading to an outbreak of violence across the country. Kaitlin Bucaro and Robbie Morris planned their February 27 wedding in Guadalajara, Mexico, more than a year ago. But as the Chicago couple quickly realized, it’s not a safe place to be right now, and they need to shift their plans.

Bucaro and Morris told WGN that Guadalajara holds a special place in their hearts. They have long dreamed of having their fairy tale wedding there. But with what’s happening in the country right now, they know it’s not safe for them or their 150 guests to travel there.

“We’ve done two visits and taken our moms to see our venue. We’ve really put in an incredible amount of time and effort, especially this one has done an incredible job planning our dream wedding,” Bucaro told the news outlet.

She added that as the news began to spread about the violence in the country, it was an easy decision to make.

“We very quickly realized that at this time, it’s not really a safe city that we could be bringing our guests to,” Bucaro said. “We have a lot of out-of-towners who were coming, not only from Chicago, and they’ve already called us and said ‘we’re rebooked for Chicago this Thursday.’”

In a separate interview with Fox 32, Morris said above anything, he wants the people of Guadalajara to remain safe.

“Our thoughts are with them first,” he shared. “I mean, we’re so happy that our people are safe and we didn’t bring them into that, but we know that people that are struggling through it, and so that’s hard as well.”

Bucaro said the next hurdle they must overcome is putting together a wedding in the Chicago or one of its suburbs in a matter of days.

“We’re getting married on Friday, and I don’t know what that looks like, but it’s going to be great, and it’s going to be full of love, and that’s all that matters,” she told Fox 32.

Morris shared a similar sentiment with WGN.

“We don’t know how it’s going to look or where it’s going to be but it’s going down — the show goes on,” he explained. “We don’t have a venue, vendors, a band, a DJ, catering, nothing but we will by Friday.”

This couple deserves all the love and support they can get right now. We hope they have a long and happy marriage. With this kind of positive attitude about a truly heartbreaking situation, it sounds like they’re off to a great start.
