Grieving Family Spot ‘Dead’ Baby’s Hand Moving Inside Her Coffin at Her Funeral & Rush Her to Hospital

No one wants to bury a child. When a baby dies, it goes against the natural order of things. Children should outlive their parents. A family in Brazil was understandably devastated to have to bury Kiara Crislayne de Moura dos Santos. The 8-month-old infant was rushed to the hospital on the morning of October 19. Eventually, medics declared her dead.

Kiara’s family moved quickly with her funeral arrangements. Just two hours after her death, funeral director Aureo Arruda Ramos, came to collect the baby’s body from the Faustino Riscarolli Hospital Foundation.

Kiara's funeral took place just 16 hours after she was pronounced dead.

After the funeral director claimed her body, Kiara’s parents bought clothes for the baby girl to wear in her coffin, the Mirror reported. The service began at 7 p.m., just 16 hours after medical staff pronounced her dead. But the service ended abruptly when one of the mourners noticed Kiara’s hand moving.

Another person touched Kiara’s hand and she reportedly grasped it tightly. Eventually, a nearby pharmacist discovered she was still breathing. They called the paramedics.

Kiara did have a pulse.

When the emergency service personnel checked Kiara, they found that she had a pulse and an oxygen saturation level of 84%, which requires instant critical care.

During their examination, they did not detect any signs of rigor mortis, which typically sets in within six to eight hours after death.

Sadly, by the time Kiara arrived at the hospital, doctors pronounced her dead for a second time. “We were devastated already,” her father Cristiano Santos said. “Then there came a little bit of hope, but then this ended up happening.”

Now, the hospital is under investigation.

During her second examination, doctors performed an electrocardiogram. No electric signals were found and her death was confirmed again, The U.S. Sun reported.

Now, Brazil’s specialist scientific police is investigating the hospital that declared her dead, not once but twice. This time, the General Institute of Forensics will handle Kiara’s case.

The local government issued an apology to the family.

Correia Pinto City Hall, which is in Brazil’s Santa Catarina state, apologized to the family and promised an investigation and report within the next 30 days.

A spokesperson for the city issued this statement:  “The Municipality of Correia Pinto reiterates its commitment to provide the best care for all citizens, and reinforces that, under no circumstances, can any professional issue certificates or statements without proper authentication of the patient’s condition. In addition, all health professionals are constantly oriented and trained, ensuring that people’s lives and well-being are always the priority.”
