Something should feel special about heading off on a tropical vacation with your partner. Especially if you’re an active couple who loves to explore your surroundings, it can feel like you’re discovering a whole new world together. But sometimes those adventures don’t go exactly as planned. Terrifyingly, for one woman who was taking what she thought was a celebratory birthday trip in Hawaii with her doctor husband, it ended in him allegedly trying to push her off a cliff during a hiking excursion.
An esteemed anesthesiologist allegedly tried to push his wife off a cliff during a Hawaii vacation.
It’s a court case that has garnered quite a bit of attention. Exactly one year after the incident, Arielle Konig, 37, took the stand before a jury to testify against her husband, Gerhardt Konig, in his attempted murder case, per People.
On a trip to celebrate Arielle Konig’s birthday on March 24, 2025, Gerhardt Konig wanted to take his wife on a hike, which included venturing to a scenic cliff in Oahu.
Things quickly took a turn when Arielle Konig refused to go up an elevation because she was scared of how steep it was and her husband decided to use this opportunity to allegedly try to push his wife off the cliff, per People.
Seriously, this sounds like something out of a bad TV movie.
What her husband said to her in the moments leading up to the murder attempt is chilling.
After taking a photo with her husband against a steep cliff, which made her quite uneasy, she asked her husband, who worked as an anesthesiologist, to step aside so she could move away from the edge and make her way safely to the trail, People reported.
According to CBS News, Arielle Konig told the jury that she “walked up to him” and he “grabbed [her] really forcibly by [her] upper arms and he said, ‘I’m so f—ing sick of this s—. Get back over here.’ And he starts pushing [her] back towards the cliff.”
Per People, Arielle Konig recounted that as her husband was trying to pull her close to the cliff, he took out a syringe and she heard him say, “hold still.” When he failed with the syringe, Arielle Konig testified that Gerhardt Konig “repeatedly bashed her head with a rock,” CBS News reported.
Arielle Konig testified that her husband told her to “Shut the f— up. Nobody’s gonna hear you out here. Nobody’s coming to save you,” before two nearby hikers heard her cries for help and called 911, People reported.
Utterly chilling.
On the third day of testimony, Arielle recounted how her husband tried to persuade her in the moments before the violent attack.
Arielle Konig, a nuclear scientist who works in Maui, told the court that when the couple arrived at their hiking destination, Pali Lookout, which is about 1,200 feet high, they stumbled upon two people who seemed lost and needed some help, but her husband told her “It’d be nicer if it’s just us,” People reported.
She recounted that due to the steep cliffs, extremely windy weather, and narrow hiking trails, she was feeling “uneasy” and she told her husband that she didn’t want to keep going, per People.
When Gerhardt Konig ventured ahead of her, Arielle Konig testified that he urged his wife to join him near the steep cliff as he told her it was “really beautiful” and “it’s too dangerous by [himself],” the magazine reported.
All of this appears to be very calculated and planned out on his part. Gerhardt Konig has pleaded not guilty to the charge of attempted murder. He could receive a sentence of life in prison if he’s convicted.
According to Court TV, after the alleged attack, Arielle Konig filed for divorce and obtained a restraining order against her husband. She also said her husband accused her of having an affair and that there were times when Gerhardt Konig sexually abused and assaulted her.
