Young Boy Found Crying for Parents While Covered in Burns After Home Exploded & Caught Fire Unexpectedly

A neighborhood in the northwest suburbs of Chicago has been rocked by an unexpected home explosion that killed one person and left two others injured. Many people in the neighborhood were sitting at home when suddenly, the whole neighborhood was rocked by the blast. The explosion set the home on fire immediately, which is ultimately what injured the people inside. Currently, multiple local and state agencies are investigating what could have caused the blast while those in the home receive medical treatment.

As for the people living in the neighborhood, they are picking up the pieces after something that changed everyone forever.

First responders arrived at the scene immediately.

Members of the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District were dispatched to the home at 7:50 p.m. on May 17, 2026, a statement read. Fire crews arrived in less than two minutes to find “an active structure fire with significant damage and multiple victims.”

Because of the severity of the fire, other fire and EMS crews had to be called in for assistance. Two other homes also were damaged by the explosion.

Sadly, one person was declared dead at the scene, the statement shared. Two other victims were taken to area hospitals, and one was airlifted because of the injuries received.

“The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District extends its deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragic event,” the statement read.

One of the people injured in the incident was a 78-year-old man, and the other was a 26-year-old man, WLS reported, citing the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office. According to the McHenry County Coroner’s Office, the person killed had been autopsied on May 18.

That person still has not been identified because of how badly the body was burned.

“Very rare to see fire scenes like this, this is my 30th year in fire service and very few of these calls we see,” Wonder Lake Fire Chief Matt Yegge said.

The home explosion has rattled the entire neighborhood — quite literally.

Neighbor Richard Norman told WLS that the explosion “shook the entire neighborhood and knocked things off our walls, and glass debris raining down all the way into our driveway.”

Norman, who lives a block from where the incident took place, said he and his family were watching television when they heard and felt the boom. They quickly ran over to offer their help.

As one of the first people on the scene, he immediately attempted to pull someone out before the home was totally engulfed in flames. “He was in excruciating pain, and all we wanted to do was get the poor man some help,” Norman said.

According to WLS, neighbors spent most of the day cleaning up debris from the explosion. By the morning of May 18, what was left of the house had collapsed, and the front door was in a neighbor’s driveway, NBC Chicago reported.

The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District noted that the cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and multiple fire and rescue districts from McHenry County, per NBC Chicago.

People can’t get over what they saw.

“I showed up, the house was in shambles,” neighbor Cyrena Sutherland told CBS News Chicago. “I saw the son out there crying about his parents, so I went to give him a hug to comfort him, and I realized he was covered in burns himself.”

Another neighbor, Dave Schultheis, called the experience “a shock,” and compared the scene to “carnage.”

“About a little after 7:30 last night, we were watching TV, and just a loud explosion — windows and everything. Just, we knew it was not fireworks. Jumped up off the couch, looked out the window, and you could see debris falling from the sky, boards, shingles, papers on fire,” he told CBS News Chicago. “With that, we went out the front door. There was papers lit coming down out of the air on our deck, in our lawn, and a handful of documents from someone’s mortgage that we have collected.”
