A 3-Year-Old Was Crushed by a Monument & His Mom Was the Nurse Who Received Him at the Hospital

A three-year-old boy by the name of Kaleb Ortega died shortly after an accident at Rooks Park in Walla Walla, Wash. The boy was crushed by a monument that fell on him. When he was taken to the hospital, his mom, Claudia Ortega, was one of the nurses on staff at the time. Afterward, the family started a GoFundMe and also reportedly took legal action against multiple companies tied to the monument at the Washington park.

According to LADBible, his injuries related to the accident were too severe and he did not survive them after he was taken to the hospital. Now, there are discussions about what happened, how it could have been prevented, and who might be at fault for the deadly accident involving the child.

The little boy died at the hospital where his mom works.

Kaleb was with his sister and father at Rooks Park when a monument fell on top of him. For reference, there are multiple stone monuments at the park that patrons can interact with, as there are no barriers nearby to stop them from getting close enough to take photos and even tough the monuments.

The monuments are made of heavy rock and stone materials. It’s unclear how much the monument weighed, but Kaleb was a small child and unable to move the boulder-sized monument off of himself when it fell on him. And when one fell on top of Kaleb, it had a catastrophic result.

The aspect of the story including Claudia at the hospital to receive her son unknowingly after the accident is what has gripped some people. In a Reddit thread about the accident, users agreed that it would be something unimaginable for most parents. Others pointed out the side of the boulder monuments and how people may underestimate the weight of them.

The family started a GoFundMe.

After the accident, Kaleb’s family started a GoFundMe with the idea in mind to help them cope financially as they tried to move forward in life without the youngest member of the family. The family member who started the GoFundMe, Mimi Garcia, wrote that Kaleb was a “joyful, busy little boy who filled every moment with life.” He was also close to his five-year-old sister, who was with him at the time of the accident.

“We are asking for support to help cover funeral expenses and to give Kaleb’s family the time and space they need to grieve and begin to heal,” the GoFundMe explains. “Any donation, no matter the amount, or simply keeping this family in your prayers, means so much. Kaleb is my nephew, our family is navigating this heartbreaking and unexpected loss together, and we created this fundraiser to help support them during this incredibly difficult time.”

They are also taking legal action.

After the accident, the Union-Bulletin reported that the Garcia family made the steps to sue multiple companies involved in the making of the monuments at the park. The family also alleged that there are no clear warnings in place to make people aware of any possible dangers, like the one that three-year-old Kaleb experienced.

Per the outlet, the family took legal action against Boulder Magic, Boulder Designs, Builders FirstSource, American Rock Products, Neil Binder and the Binder marital community, Wenzel Nursery, and Double T Construction. It’s not clear how much money the lawsuit is demanding or what the outcome has been so far. As of late June 2026, the family’s GoFundMe reached more than $59,000 of its $70,000 goal.
