What to Know
When the Netflix documentary and then Hulu docuseries episode about the deaths of Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan dropped, the family members of the diseased men spoke about their losses. Now, their families continue to speak out, especially since Mackenzie Shirilla, who was Russo’s girlfriend and Flanagan’s friend, is in prison after being convicted of their murders in a reportedly intentional car crash.
When Shirilla took a prison selfie that was uploaded to her Instagram account which is managed by people close to her outside of prison, people were confused. In the photo, Shirilla appears to be in full glam, with styled hair, pouty lips, shaped eyebrows, and makeup. After social media users shared their shock at the photo, Russo’s sister, Christine Russo, spoke out about it herself, according to TMZ.
Dominic Russo’s sister is in the Netflix documentary.
Christine spoke to TMZ about Shirilla’s prison photos that were posted on Instagram, and then shared across social media. Luckily for Christine, she has most of the internet on her side when it comes to her thoughts about Shirilla and the crime that Shirilla was found guilty of.
“As Dominic Russo’s sister, it is heartbreaking to see someone convicted in connection with my brother’s death appear to have a social media presence while our family is suffering every day,” she said, per TMZ. “While my brother is buried, seeing her post selfies, full face of makeup, and bragging how she is famous is painful and, to me, completely inconsistent with remorse.”
After Christine posted more about the case on Instagram, users commented to share their support for her.
“She survived for a reason! To serve her punishment in human form,” one user commented, in clear reference to Shirilla. “There are so many people standing behind you. I truly believe she will never get out.”
Another person commented to share their hope that Shirilla and her parents are unable to earn money from telling their side of the story, even with Shirilla behind bars.
They wrote, “I hope you win and they change the law so that she and her family can get money in any way by telling their ‘version’ of the case. I’m so glad they said no again to the appeal.”
Mackenzie Shirilla spoke out on Instagram.
When one of Shirilla’s prison selfies was posted on Instagram, she seemed to say, per the caption, that she appreciates the support she has received from people. But her selfies, in which she seems to be doing a little better than you might expect someone to be while serving a life sentence, Shirilla doesn’t look like she is suffering much. And, understandably, the Russo and Flanagan families don’t seem pleased by any freedoms Shirilla is given.
Davion Flanagan’s sister has spoken out about Mackenzie Shirilla too.
Even before Shirilla released her selfies from prison, Flanagan’s sister, Davyne Flanagan, spoke about her brother and about the case. She appears in the Netflix documentary The Crash, and she has answered questions on social media too. After the documentary was released, Davyne posted a YouTube video where she doubles down on having wanted Shirilla to receive the maximum sentence.
“Parents should actually start being parents,” she says in the video, in reference to Shirilla’s parents, who are also featured in the Netflix documentary. “It’s cool to be friends with your kids, I guess, if that leads to them being addicted to nicotine because they started in sixth grade and you were okay with them smoking weed underage and now they’re intellectually behind. Yep. Great parenting. Got to love it.”
