A Tennessee man is being hailed a hero after saving two babies from a terrifying situation. Nicholas Garrett heard what sounded like a child being abused and began to search for the child. He realized the sounds of a screaming baby were coming from an abandoned home on Eden Drive in the city's Frayser neighborhood. Garrett had no idea what he was about to uncover.
He found a 9-month-old baby alone, wearing nothing but a soiled diaper, in the freezing cold house. The child was cold and afraid, and Garrett began a livestream on Facebook to try to find the adults responsible. His kindness and quick thinking were likely lifesaving.
Garrett immediately tried to save the child.
As he realized where the sound was coming from, he quickly entered the home. "I saw the baby's hand come out the door," he explained during an interview with Fox 13. "They had the door tied up with shoestring. I ran up there and got the baby out of the house. He didn't have on no clothes but a pamper."
He said the baby was so cold and just shivered.
Neighbors came to help.
Garrett's live video shows him outside of the house, holding the baby and asking those around who the baby belongs to. After calling 911, a neighbor told Garrett there were twin babies in the neighborhood.
"Where is the other one at then?" he asks in the video.
After the police arrived, they found a second baby in the home covered in a blanket. Initially, Garrett thought that the second child had died and posted on Facebook his heartbreak that he could not save the baby. Thankfully, the child survived, and both infants were placed in the car of a family member.
Garrett continued his quest to help the babies.
Even though the children were safe with family members after the frightening discovery, Garrett still wanted to help. He organized a collection on Facebook for community members to donate items for the babies. Family and friends collected everything from diapers to baby gear for the twins.
"We went to Walmart, Family Dollar, and we got so much stuff for this baby, like both of them," Garrett told Action News 5.
Garrett's attentiveness may have saved the children.
Many posted on the Fox 13 Memphis Facebook page praising him.
"Thankful for the young man that was able to save the babies. We have good people in this crazy world!," someone wrote.
"Wow people are just heartless thank God for that young man" a comment reads.
"Nicholas Garrett Thank you for taking quick action and saving the babies from harm. Well done young man!" another person wrote.
Police did not release the parents' identities.
The Memphis Police Department confirmed that the babies were found in the home alone and that the Department of Children's Services was called to the house around 6 p.m. Friday, according to Fox 13. DCS removed the children from the home and placed them in the custody of relatives. There has been no word on if any arrests will be made in the case.
