Husband Likely Dead & Wife Seriously Injured After Home Explodes in Alleged Attempted Murder-Suicide Plot

It may sound cliché, but life really can change in an instant. One small change in your health can impact an entire future, as can a serious accident. While those pills are hard to swallow, when life changes because of the intentional act of someone else, it can be the most disorienting. That is especially true if it is done by someone we trust wholeheartedly. I can’t imagine someone I deeply love completely betraying me or intentionally causing harm. Yet so many people are blindsided by those they love, and sometimes the repercussions are catastrophic.

Police believe Lucy Preston was a victim of such a catastrophic decision.

According to People, authorities allege Lucy Preston’s husband, Doug Preston, may be responsible for their Michigan home’s explosion. The Kent County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the incident after the home in Plainfield Township burst into flames at 4 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. Law enforcement thinks Doug Preston allowed natural gas to flow out of the basement with the intent of committing a murder-suicide.

“We have determined at this point this believes to be a domestic-related situation at the home. And that the fire was intentionally set, what we believe by the husband at this point, intending to be a murder suicide,” Undersheriff Bryan Muir said, reported WMMT.

Two neighbors reportedly pulled Lucy from the home.

Tim Johnson, one of the men who ran into the house to save her, told WOOD-TV: “She was moving around. She was calling for help. I had to get in there and get her out.”

A body believed to be Doug Preston’s was found at the scene hours later, but he has not been officially identified.

The outlet also reported that authorities said evidence recovered at the scene, including incriminating text messages and statements from Lucy, led them to believe the explosion was intentional. Court records reviewed by the outlet state the couple was in the middle of a divorce

A GoFundMe aims to help Lucy financially with recovery because she is far from out of the woods yet.

According to the fundraising page, she has suffered excruciating burns and is currently still on a ventilator.

“The road ahead will be unimaginably long and painful, filled with surgeries, intensive treatments, and rehabilitation,” the description reads. “Lucy is a caring, selfless person who has always given so much to those around her. She does so much for her community and is always willing to help others however she can. So many people know and love Lucy for her kindness, generosity, and big heart. In addition to these heartbreaking injuries, Lucy lost everything in the fire — her home, belongings, and sense of security in an instant.”

Authorities believe the investigation into the incident will be “lengthy.”
