When you’re a mom, seeing your children get bullied is incredibly hard. We want to protect our babies and keep them from getting hurt. As a mom who was bullied as a kid, I take it extra personally if my son tells me people are picking on him. I just want to make whoever hurt his feelings pay. But then I realize that maybe it’s not the smartest move to make. Not all moms, however, have the same feelings about dealing with their kids’ bullies as I do.
Utah mom Shannon Marie Tufuga doesn’t believe in letting someone else handle things. After she found out her son was being bullied, she did what she had to do, and now she’s facing the consequences.
She confronted her son’s bully herself.

Tufuga was charged on March 23, 2026, KSL reported. The 40-year-old mother faces child kidnapping and aggravated child abuse charges. Although they are typically first-degree felonies, the Utah County Attorney’s Office filed them as second-degree felonies “after determining that the reduction would be in the interests of justice.”
The incident took place on September 17, 2025, according to the outlet. Tufuga “was driving around looking” for the 11-year-old boy. When she found him riding his bicycle, she allegedly stopped and confronted him about bullying her son, the charging documents read.
She might have gone a little too far in her quest for justice.

Tufuga “made [him] get into her vehicle,” ABC 4 reported, citing court documents. She then drove him from Orem to her home in Provo, without his parents knowing.
After the boy apologized, she “threatened to have her husband beat up” the boy, telling him he was “lucky she did not run over [the victim’s] bike,” per ABC 4.
According to court documents, the boy now has “serious emotional distress” as a result of Tufuga’s actions. He has been dealing with “high anxiety and has had to significantly alter his daily routines due to the incident.”
Tufuga is not in police custody, but a summons has been issued for her to appear at any court hearings.
Even though many people understand why she did it, they believe her approach could have been better.
KSL shared the story on its Facebook page, and people had no trouble chiming in to offer their opinions on what Tufuga did.
“Was this illegal and possibly a bit extreme, perhaps. Do I understand where she’s coming from, ABSOLUTELY! It’s unfortunate that the ‘bully’ is experiencing trauma from the incident BUT what about the trauma they caused to the one that was bullied?” one person commented.
“I’m all for a little kid on kid playground justice(bullies often only understand their own language)… HOWEVER, THIS! No… that’s an adult who should’ve talked to the other boy’s parent,” someone else wrote.
“Maybe if his parents should have taught him to not bully other children. If his parents had taken care of it, then she wouldn’t have had to take care of it herself,” another person chimed in.
“If they are going to charge her, then charge the bully also. So many unfortunate children have committed suicide because of bullies,” another commenter wrote. “Time to hold them and their parents accountable.”
