Student Who Was Stabbed in the Heart at a High School Track Meet Died in Twin Brother’s Arms

A 17-year-old Texas high school student allegedly stabbed another student to death during a track meet at Frisco Independent School District’s Kuykendall Stadium. The victim, 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, a junior at Frisco Memorial High School, died despite lifesaving measures. Police arrested Karmelo Anthony, 17, a student at Frisco Centennial High School, in connection with the stabbing a short time later. The family claims the victim did not know the suspect, and now they want to understand what happened.

According to the Frisco Police Department, an altercation occurred between the two students that ended with Anthony allegedly stabbing Metcalf about 10 a.m. April 2, 2025. Per NBC News, the Frisco Independent School District said the track meet was the 11-5A championships and included more than 100 students from eight schools. Police assured they secured the scene, and that the stabbing appeared to be an isolated incident.

Following the stabbing, the police department shared words of support with the victim’s family.

“The Frisco Police Department grieves with all those affected by this devastating loss and extends its deepest condolences to the victim’s family, students, and staff who are experiencing unimaginable pain. The department is collaborating with the Frisco Independent School District and will continue to provide any support they need during this incredibly difficult time,” a statement reads.

Austin’s father, Jeff Metcalf, told NBC News his son was an identical twin, and his brother, Hunter, ran to his side.

“They were twins, identical twins, and his brother was holding on to him, trying to make it stop bleeding, and he died in his brother’s arms,” Metcalf said. “I rushed up there and I saw him on the gurney and I could tell – they said he wasn’t breathing. I could see all the blood, and I saw where the wound was, and I was very concerned, so I had to find his brother, and we rushed to the hospital. And we prayed, and it’s God’s plan, I don’t understand it, but they weren’t able to save him. This is murder.”

Metcalf added his son had a 4.0 GPA and was his football team’s MVP. He had a bright future that ended in a split second. The grieving father questioned the suspect’s parents and how they raised their son. He is grappling with the tragic way Austin died.

“You know what, I already forgive this person,” Metcalf added, via NBC News. “Already. God takes care of things. God is going to take care of me. God is going to take care of my family.”

Metcalf created a GoFundMe account to aid with his son’s final expenses. He’s raised more than $96,000 thus far.

“He was looking forward to taking his game to the next level. His commitment, dedication, leadership, and sheer grit made him rise to the level of success that he desired. His twin brother, Hunter, played beside him,” the father wrote on the fundraiser. “We will all remember him for the way he impacted others’ lives. I love you forever, son. It’s not goodbye, it’s see you later. God will take care of us till we meet again. RIP. Love, Dad.”

Anthony faces one count of first-degree murder, the police release noted. A judge ordered him to jail without bond.
