Wild animals are mysterious creatures that can be extremely dangerous. We must proceed with caution when entering an animal’s natural habitat and respect its space. But sometimes, even when we are extremely careful, tragic accidents can occur. A teenager in India recently went to gather water from a river and had a deadly encounter with a crocodile. Her story serves as a grim reminder to always be vigilant for danger in the wild.
According to The Independent, 15-year-old Shivani Keva, went to gather water from the Parvati River in the Baran district of Rajasthan on September 15, 2025, when a crocodile suddenly lunged at her. The reptile then grabbed hold of Shivani and pulled her into the water, Kishanganj Police Station Officer Ramesh Chand confirmed.
Villagers reportedly witnessed the attack and rushed to help her. Some launched boats into the water, hoping to scare the crocodile away. Sadly, that didn’t work, and Shivani remained in the animal’s grip. Police and other first responders arrived on the scene and searched until nightfall with no luck.
The following morning, villagers reported seeing Shivani’s body floating in the water. An autopsy revealed that Shivani did not die from injuries sustained in the crocodile attack. In a positively heart-wrenching twist, experts determined the teenager had drowned.
Per The Independent, authorities believe a mugger crocodile attacked Shivani and pulled her into the water. Crocattack.org reports mugger crocodiles pose a serious danger to humans.
“In recent years, it is estimated that around 50-60 people have been killed annually, mostly in India. The highest numbers have been reported from the Indian states of Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, where muggers are frequently found in areas of high human population density, including urban areas,” the organization explains.
Following Shivani’s death, police turned her body over to her family for last rites.
