Bodycam Video Shows Police Officer Shoot & Kill 16-Year-Old Trying To Run From Another Shooting

San Diego police have released bodycam footage of a teenager being shot by a police officer. The footage is jarring to watch. It shows the teen running and being shot by the officer, seemingly without cause. The boy later died in the hospital. Another police department will reportedly be undertaking the investigation for transparency.

There are still questions about the boy and why he was running in the first place. And now that the bodycam footage has been released, people have a lot to say about seemingly unnecessary killing.

The San Diego Police Department released the bodycam footage on its Facebook page. It shared additional security footage alongside the bodycam footage. “The videos contain graphic images and language. Viewer discretion is advised,” a warning shared in the post notes.

“The San Diego Police Department is committed to being open and transparent with the public,” the post continued. “The following video is of a critical incident regarding an officer-involved shooting that took place on January 28, 2025.”

In a report released days after the shooting, CBS8 identified the teenager shot as 16-year-old Konoa Steven Wilson. Wilson was a student at Bayside Community School in Logan Heights in San Diego. The incident happened just before 9 p.m., while police officers were investigating something else nearby when they were diverted to a shooting near the Metropolitan Transit System trolley platform.

According to police, Officer Daniel Gold, who has been with the SDPD for two years, came into contact with Wilson. Their interaction led to the teenager being shot. The teen was taken to the hospital where he eventually died from his injuries. No officers were injured in the shooting.

To maintain objectivity, the San Diego Sheriff’s Department Homicide Unit is conducting the investigation into the shooting. Once its investigation is complete, the district attorney’s office will determine if the officer bears liability for the shooting.

The release of the bodycam footage is required under California law, and it is no doubt concerning. “While it’s never easy to watch this kind of footage, our department remains committed to transparency and ensuring a fair, thorough, independent investigation,” Police Chief Scott Wahl said in a statement that People published.

People on Facebook made their feelings about the incident clear in the comments section.

“You guys are trying to justify this killing by saying he had a gun!” one comment reads. “He was a victim running away!”

“So you shot someone running away from gunfire???” another person questioned.

“So y’all shot the victim!!!” someone else exclaimed.

Another comment reads: “This absolutely is terrifying! So now if there is a shooting and I’m running to safety I now have to fear being shot by a cop who can’t control his response system! Wow!!!”

The teenager’s father, Steven Wilson, spoke with CBS8, calling his son “a leader” who hadn’t been in trouble before. He claimed the boy didn’t normally get into trouble, and that the incident “doesn’t make sense.”
