Two teens have been accused of taking a New York City subway train on a joyride. The incident occurred just after midnight on September 12. It’s unclear how the teenagers were able to access the train and get it running, per the Associated Press. Once they got the unoccupied train running, they took it for a joyride and crashed it into another train. They then fled the scene.
The New York City Police Department shared surveillance photos of the incident. The photos showed one of the teenagers, a 17-year-old girl, wearing all pink. The other teenager, a 17-year-old boy, was wearing a blue tank top and red shorts, per ABC News.

The joyride led to a collision.
After the teens began operating the train, they allegedly crashed it into another parked train. The train they took was empty and out of service, but the collision caused damage to the train, according to ABC News. It is believed that the joyride did not result in any injuries. The degree to which the trains were damaged is unclear, the Associated Press reported.
Police don't know how the teens accessed the train.
Police remain uncertain about how the teens were able to access and operate the subway train, as of September 19. They drove the subway train about 50 feet, said Demetrius Crichlow, the interim president of the New York City Transit Authority, per the BBC.

The two teenagers have been charged in connection with the subway joyride.
The 17-year-old girl was arrested on September 18. She has been charged with criminal mischief and reckless endangerment. At the time of her arrest, the teenage boy remained at large, but he was later arrested, the BBC reported. Crichlow called the subway joyride “extremely foolish and reckless.”
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is upping its security measures.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs New York City’s mass transit network, is increasing surveillance on trains in an attempt to prevent similar incidents. The MTA is reportedly “aggressively” installing security cameras on its subway trains, and 70% of them now have security cameras, according to ABC News.
The two teenagers are not the only people who have taken a New York City subway train on a joyride.
A similar incident happened less than eight months ago in Queens. At that time, two out-of-service trains were stolen by a group of people and taken for a short joyride. It is believed the group gained access to the trains using a stolen key, per the BBC. No one was injured during that incident.
