The parents of a baby girl who died after swallowing a battery are suing their landlord. They say their landlord failed to fix a broken appliance after receiving multiple reports about it, which later contributed to their baby’s death. Haja Sesay and Barbejo Ziaty, began renting their apartment in Iowa in September 2022.
Their baby, Faith Rachel Ziaty, died on December 17, 2022. She was born on February 21, 2022. Faith’s parents filed a civil complaint against the company they rented the apartment from, Conlin Properties, Inc., on August 27, according to The Kansas City Star.

When they moved in, they informed their landlord about the broken dishwasher in their apartment.
According to the complaint, the couple reported an issue with their dishwasher to the landlord when they first moved into their apartment. When filling out a move-in inventory form, they noted that the dishwasher was broken and needed to be fixed, per The Kansas City Star. There was reportedly an issue with the kickplate on the dishwasher.
The couple contacted the landlord about the issue again.
On several other occasions, the couple brought the broken dishwasher to their landlord’s attention. Although they reached out to the landlord several times, the dishwasher was reportedly never fixed, per the news outlet. Because the kickplate was broken, their daughter was able to access the area beneath the dishwasher, the lawsuit alleges.

The 10-month-old baby swallowed a battery.
The 10-month-old baby, Faith, grabbed an old watch battery from under the dishwasher one day. After finding the battery, she reportedly put it in her mouth and swallowed it. The family alleges that their baby was able to reach the battery under the dishwasher because of the broken kickplate that their landlord failed to fix in a timely manner.
The couple's baby died after swallowing the battery.
After the baby swallowed the battery, her mom noticed that her mouth was bleeding and promptly took her to a veterinary clinic across the street, The Kansas City Star reported. Faith was taken to the hospital, but she died the following day. Battery acid reportedly burned the baby’s esophagus.
Faith's family 'all love her very much.'
In her obituary, Faith was described as an “easy going” and “happy” baby who “recently began learning to walk.”
“She was quite a speedy crawler, especially if you were in her good graces. If you left the room, she would be right behind you wondering where you were going,” her obituary reads. She is survived by her mom and dad and several siblings. “Faith loved being around her family who all love her very much,” her obituary said.
