Woman Allegedly Went ‘Crazy’ & Shot Infant Granddaughter in the Head

Police in Ohio claim a grandmother did the unthinkable to her infant granddaughter. Mia Desiree Harris, 43, is accused of shooting the almost 6-month-old in the head inside an apartment on Dutchview Court in Liberty Township. The infant is reportedly in critical condition.

According to court documents obtained by WKRC, the grandmother was allegedly acting violently in the early hours of December 9, and her anger reportedly ended in a violent shooting. Now, she is in jail.

Harris allegedly got into a physical fight before the shooting.

The grandmother got into a fight with a family member around 1 a.m. Saturday, WKRC reported. She allegedly continued a rampage and reportedly shot into a bedroom several times. Next, Harris allegedly broke down the door and went after the baby.

The infant was seriously injured.

When Harris finally got into the bedroom, she allegedly attempted to shoot another family member in the head at "close range" but missed, WLWT reported. That is when she reportedly turned the gun on the nearly 6-month-old and shot her in the head.

Multiple witnesses called 911.

According to Local 12, the baby's mother called 911 for help and said, "My baby's been shot. My baby's been shot!"

The dispatcher reportedly asked the mother what was happening, and she asserted the baby had been shot and she needed help right away.

Harris' daughter reportedly also called 911 for help, telling the dispatcher that her mother shot her niece, the news outlet reported.

A neighbor also called 911 to tell them they were sleeping and someone shot into their room.

Harris had apparently been acting erratically.

The baby's mother allegedly told a 911 dispatcher the reason Harris was shooting was "Because she was mad at us. She's going crazy," WLWT reported.

The baby's maternal grandmother, April Traynor, told the news outlet her granddaughter is "just a joy," and she needs a lot of prayers. She's being treated at Cincinnati Children's.

"I don't know why. I can't answer those questions. I can only pray for my granddaughter," Traynor said. "She's beautiful. She's an angel sent to my daughter from heaven. My daughter loves her with all of her heart. So does her daddy."

The sheriff called the shooting 'disgusting.'

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones told Fox 19 the alleged shooting was not an accident, and he was horrified that someone who is supposed to be a trusted person in the infant's life could do such a thing.

"This is one of the most disgusting, vile criminal acts I've ever seen, shooting a 6-month-old baby. What makes it even worse is this is the baby's grandmother," the sheriff said, per the news outlet. "The baby is hanging onto life as we speak. It's in God's hands now. We should all pray for this 6-month-old baby."

He added that his prayers are with the medical team tasked with saving the infant's life.

"Imagine doing surgery on that small of a child where these crazy people do these things to kids. It's disgusting and it's one of the worst things I've seen," he said, per Fox 19. "I feel sorry for the baby, the family, everybody that's dealing with this. The doctors, the life squad people, the deputies, everybody. This is as bad as it gets."

Harris allegedly left the apartment after the shooting but was apprehended a short time later. She is being held on a $1.5 million bond and faces three counts of felonious assault, Fox 19 reported.
