This Baby Was Reportedly Born Gripping His Mother’s Failed IUD in One Hand

An Idaho woman's surprise pregnancy story has left the internet stunned and is inadvertently causing women to second-guess their own birth control methods. According to TikTok user @violet_quick, she gave birth last week to a healthy baby boy, just nine months after she first learned she was pregnant. But the reason Violet Quick was blindsided by the pregnancy wasn't just because it was unplanned — it was because she actually had an IUD (intra uterine device) implanted.

Now that very same IUD is going viral, thanks to an image of @violet_quick's baby gripping the device in his tiny hand shortly after being born.

The TikTok was first shared last week, but has since been made private

For days now, TikTokers have been responding in a series of stitches

And, as you might imagine, each one is drawing a slew of comments from shocked viewers.

Some have come from women who are now on edge about their own IUDs.

"I did not spend $900 and go through the worst f–king pain ever for this [to be possible] … ," one user shared.

Another woman simply filmed herself screaming into a pillow after watching the video.

Still, there were others who seemed to find the whole thing rather amusing.

"Jokes on YOU MOMMY!" someone wrote on one stitch. "I MADE IT THROUGH ANYWAY!"

IUDs are said to be one of the best birth control methods out there

In part, that's because they're nearly foolproof. Unlike the pill, you can't "forget" to take it, since it's implanted in the uterus. And unless you intentionally have it removed by a doctor, it can last three to 12 years inside the body.

According to Planned Parenthood, studies have shown that the device is also 99% effective, meaning that fewer than 1 in 100 people who use an IUD will actually get pregnant each year.

That said, there's still a 1% chance that an "oopsie" will happen, and as Quick's story clearly shows, they really do.

This isn't the first time a story like this has made headlines

Back in 2017, a mother named Lucy Hellein posted a photo of her own newborn online shortly after giving birth. Just like baby Rudy, the little one later named Dexter, could be seen clutching his mother's IUD in his hand.

"Mirena fail!" Hellein captioned the post.

In that case, however, the mother clarified that the IUD was actually found in her uterus, and that the photo was taken only after doctors fished it out and placed it in the baby's hand.

For what it's worth, things seem to be going OK for @violet_quick

According to The Daily Mail, the 20-year-old Idaho woman may not have been planning to get pregnant at the time, but becoming a mother was definitely in her long-term plan. In fact, she and her now husband John Francis got married last year at the age of 19, and were planning on eventually starting a family. Apparently, that happened a whole lot earlier than expected.

Their little boy is said to be happy and healthy. And although it isn't quite clear whether he was literally born holding the IUD, or simply given it to hold for the photos, the couple clearly felt they needed to capture the moment.
