Moms have had more than their fair share of juggling in 2020. Between the ongoing health crisis and various protest movements to working from home (or being let go from a job) and homeschooling, it’s been a stressful year, to put it mildly. If you’re a mom in need of extra cash, part-time jobs, daytime jobs and at-home jobs for moms can be part of your strategy to focus on you, while earning money to pay off debt faster, boost your savings, or make some overall improvements to your financial situation.
Perhaps the quickest way to increase income as a mom is by searching for specific jobs for moms. These jobs for moms can serve as a bridge to get you where you want to be professionally once your kids get a bit older and once it’s more safe to work in office settings regularly. If you’re a new mom struggling to find a full-time job, there are some jobs for moms that may get you back into the workforce on your own terms.
Jobs you can do with kids are usually daytime jobs with flexible schedules and can even be the start of your own entrepreneurial dreams. We have listed some jobs where you’ll need a specific skill set, or in some cases, credentials. You’ll need to apply for jobs and be hired. We’ve also made sure to mention some jobs that you can start today, on your own, right where you are — you just need to be creative or entrepreneurial, or sometimes both!
While most of these jobs for moms have flexible work schedules, these are jobs you can do with kids granted you have a dedicated and (mostly) quiet place to focus that working moms need.
Nonetheless, we hope we can help you get started making more money and living a better life with these jobs for moms.
Tutor
More students are turning to the internet when they have trouble with their assignments, homework, or need help studying for exams. If you’re one of the rare moms that has enjoyed homeschooling, then you might be a great tutor. As a tutor, a Bachelor’s Degree is required as you’ll be an education expert connecting with students all over the country, and sometimes the world. It will take some good research to find the best platform for your needs as a tutor, but the best online tutoring programs are those that have an easy-to-use platform and make it a priority to give students the academic support they need. Popular subjects include: English, Math, Computer Science, History, Writing, and Algebra.
Online Fitness Coach
If you’re like most people these days, you’re working out at home. And that yoga class, kickboxing, or dance cardio lesson is probably on YouTube or Instagram being led by a mom who created her own class. You don’t have to be Tracy Anderson, Massy Arias or Melissa Wood-Tepperberg (though it would be nice) and launch a multimillion dollar company, but you can start your own fitness channel if you’re someone who is a certified fitness trainer (Zumba anyone!?), has a good camera on your phone, a reliable internet connection, and a social media account. Begin by recruiting some of your friends, family, and workout partners to join you for an IG live a couple times a week for 30 minutes. Once you get the ball rolling, your friends will tell their friends and you can start charging for the service.
Teach English Online
Teaching English online has taken the online world by storm. In this role, teachers are helping kid — and adults — around the globe conversational English in a one-on-one environment. In addition to a college degree, you’ll need an ESL certificate and some teaching experience. Most companies are looking for eager individuals with great personalities who are patient and excited to work with children — students are generally between the ages of 5 and 12. Because they are based overseas, most of these ESL programs expect the teachers to work during their daytime hours, which means working around 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. during the week, and then daytime weekend hours.
Transcriber
If you’re a skilled typist and a great listener, transcribing and captioning could be for you. Companies will hire you for general transcription and data entry of audio files — of phone calls, interviews, webinars, podcasts, dictation, and other files — to be converted into text. Transcribing usually allows you to work during the hours of your choice, which makes it one of the better jobs you can do with kids, but you will need a quiet place to work. There’s usually a test to become certified as a transcriber and once you pass, you can start working.
Online Reseller
Selling your stuff — and other people’s stuff — is big business, just ask the owners of eBay and Poshmark, as well as the tons of moms (including myself) who make a decent income as online resellers. Once looked down upon, thrift shopping and reselling are more than trending, they’re creating less waste, which is better for the environment, and creating income and careers for enterprising individuals — including a high percentage of stay-at-home moms. You’re basically a broker serving as the middlewoman between the previous owner of the item and the new buyer. Where do you get the goods? Shop yard sales, estate sale, or items from your sister who is getting a divorce, and sell them on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or eBay and make money. You’ll need to take great pictures and learn a bit about packaging and shipping costs, and then you’re in business. From those sales you keep all the profit. If you’re selling items for someone else, your fee should be about 20% of the total sale.
Customer Service Representative
Are you patient and good at solving issues? Aren’t all moms to a degree? The job of a customer service representative might be perfect for you. As a chat agent, you’ll serve as the middlewoman between companies and the customers they service. This work-at-home position revolves around identifying the problems that customers have and trying to clarify them and provide solutions. Chat agents must have excellent communication skills, error-free typing abilities, and previous sales or customer service experience also helps. Chat agents must also be available to customers via internet chat or phone.
Social Media Manager
If you’re a social media aficionado, being a social media manager for a small business may be in your future. A number of companies provide outsourced social media services for small companies and entrepreneurs who don’t have the time (or expertise) to actively engage with their customers and audiences. These companies aim to provide social media posts and activity (likes, comments, and shares) on everyone’s favorite social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok. They hire social media managers to collaborate with the small businesses owners to provide quality, custom content on these social media platforms daily. You’ll need a defined workspace for this gig, because besides managing the social media accounts, the social media manager may also be tasked to track the activity of their posts, and do research about clients’ industries.
