There are two types of parents: Those feel the need to know the sex of the baby growing inside them and those who would rather let nature surprise them on the day of delivery. Well maybe there are three types. There are also the parents who will allow their children to identify their gender themselves as they get older.
But one couple learned that even modern technology is no match for the unpredictability of bringing a child into the world.

The Pilons took an at-home blood test.
When Sarah Pilon and her husband learned they were expecting their second child, they took an at-home blood test, People reported. At 16 weeks, they sought to learn the sex of the baby. The test results came back and said the couple were having another boy. The family of three did a small gender reveal and went on about their business.

Sarah did notice a difference in this pregnancy from her first one.
“I joked the entire pregnancy that there was a small chance the baby was a girl because the test said if it came back girl that it was 100% accurate, but if it says boy that there is a tiny chance the sample could have been contaminated if there are men living in the same house,” Sarah said. The couple told People something similar happened during their pregnancy with their first child.
With a planned home birth, Sarah didn’t have an ultrasound that might have revealed the baby’s sex. “I had no indication during the pregnancy but I do remember that the baby felt higher than my son ever was, but I didn’t really think anything of it during the pregnancy.”
Her husband delivered the surprising news.
On the day of her baby’s entrance, like so many births, nothing went according to plan. The baby was coming so fast that the midwife missed the birth. “So I was in our tub when [the baby] was born and my husband was there with one leg in the tub, ready to help cause she was coming whether we were ready or not,” Sarah shared.
“I was able to catch her myself, which was so cool! My husband was actually the one to look to verify that the baby was a boy a few minutes after the birth and he goes, ‘Ummm… it’s a girl!’ And I was like ‘WHAT?!’ It was hilarious!”
'She was nameless for about 24 hours,' Sarah said.
Planning for a boy, the couple had nothing “girly” ready for their new bundle. “She was nameless for about 24 hours because we never even considered a girl name. About two days after she was born, we had about 20 Amazon boxes on our porch filled with baby girl clothes and so many pink things and bows for her. It was great!!”
They even had to have a conversation with their 2-year son about his new sibling. The couple had to have a second gender reveal with family. “When we were like ‘Surprise! It’s a girl!’ everyone was freaking out!” Sarah said. “We really got a kick out of FaceTiming family and friends when we finally got a bow for her little head and everyone’s faces were just pure shock. It was really fun and exciting.”
