Every couple struggles to choose the perfect name for their child. It's a huge responsibility and often takes a lot of patience and compromise. More often than not, one party will love a name the other despises and vice versa.
But one woman is actually considering divorcing her husband of two years because of the name he is set on giving their unborn baby daughter.
The woman took to Reddit for some relationship advice in a thread titled: "Divorce on table because husband and I can't agree on baby’s name."
Sure, it sounds petty, but wait until you hear her story. She wrote that she'd gotten pregnant 7 months before posting, "so recently we started discussing name for the baby. Ever since we found out it's gonna be a girl my husband wants to name it like his ex's name," she wrote.
Not only does her husband want to name their daughter after his ex, but it's the ex he "dated for a long period of time and loved the most."
Apparently the ex-girlfriend caused problems in the married couple's current relationship, but after she moved away things got better. Now her husband is bringing it up all over again.
He told her he chose that name so he could purposefully be reminded of his ex.
"When I asked him why does he want that name so badly, he said just because he and his ex didn't work out doesn't mean he doesn't want something to keep reminding him of her," she wrote. "He doesn't understand how much it's affecting me and keeps saying it's just the hormones."
People on Reddit responded immediately and told her to file for divorce.
"Take the divorce. He is clearly not over his ex," one user wrote. While divorce might sound extreme over a name, the meaning behind the name speaks volumes. Why stay married to someone who loves someone else?
This person had an interesting anecdote about naming children after exes. Let's just say it won't end well.
"I knew a woman who wanted to name her baby after her ex. She ended up stabbing the current bf. Just putting that out there," the user wrote.
Apparently this happens more often than you think. This woman was named after her dad's lover. Her mom had no idea.
"In general, the name is beautiful, but when I think about the reason why I was named like that it makes me puke. So, for the love of God, don't ever name your child after an ex-partner," she wrote. Seems like sound advice.
Some people told her to give him a dose of his own medicine.
"Tell him that you want to name your second child after one of your previous f—k buddies because the sex was so good you just wanted to be reminded of it even though things didn't work out," the user said.
This person offered some good advice too.
If he loves the name so much, why not change his own instead of bringing the unborn child into his drama?
Meanwhile, this user was still shocked that her husband was so blunt.
"Wow! He just told you you are second best. He blatantly is saying he settled with you. No way," the user exclaimed.
And this person made everyone realize how uncomfortably cringey it would be for your daughter to remind you of your ex.
"Hey baby, let's name our daughter after this girl I banged so she can remind me of her," the user wrote. BRB while I go puke.
Can you imagine if you ran into your ex later in life, with your child who is named after them?
That sounds equally creepy and awkward. I want no part in it!
There are specific rules for naming that every couple should follow.
"Names of exes, school bullies, disliked coworkers, etc., are all, by default, off the table," this user said, which makes perfect sense. "He is being wildly unreasonable."
Some key question remain ...
One being: Can they come back from this, even if they don't use the name? According to the very brilliant minds of Redditors, the answer is no. Dump him.
