Prince William Makes a Surprise Visit With Fans During New York City Trip

Prince William is a man of the people, whether he happens to be in his home country or across the pond. During his trip to America, William spent Tuesday visiting with firefighters in New York City before doing something that nobody was expecting. He surprised fans waiting outside with a walkabout, taking the time to chat with all of the people who had gathered and were hoping to have the chance to talk to the Prince of Wales during a rare visit to the US.

Prince William visited with first responders on Tuesday.

He went to meet the firefighters of Ten House, which is near the World Trade Center, which suffered major damage (and the loss of six firefighters) during the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001. He was there to talk about members of the firehouse prioritizing their mental health while doing what can be such an emotionally and physically difficult job.

"He discussed military stuff, first responder stuff," firefighter Hamza Ahmed told People after the visit. "I always appreciate anybody who’s interested in that because you do have to take an oath to put forth the service, and it takes a lot to go through that. It’s really nice to see somebody who appreciates that."

He then surprised onlookers with a walkabout across the street.

After his visit to the FDNY, William surprised the people waiting outside to see him by stopping to meet and have conversations with them — something members of the royal family do often back home.

One mother and daughter who were lucky enough to speak to Will told People that he was asking for everyone's names and where they were from while chatting.

Videos of his conversations are now surfacing online.

It appears William really took his time with each person he spoke with. In this video, we can see him having a conversation with a woman named Sharon, who said she'd seen William in London during the coronation.

"So who's following who?" he joked.

The main reason William is in the US is for his Earthshot organization.

This week, Will attended the Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit in New York City, where he announced the 15 finalists for the Earthshot Prize Award, which is scheduled to be presented to the winner in Singapore in November. The nominees for the awards are all working on projects to help combat the global climate crisis.

It seems like William is enjoying his time in New York.

It's not often that we get to see members of the royal family stateside — you know, besides the ones who actually live here (looking at you, Meghan and Harry). It's nice to see that William appears to be having fun on his trip and meeting so many people along the way.
