Having a drink to relax at the end of the night is a pretty normal thing some moms do, but there’s a big difference between having a drink and getting drunk. Being drunk and taking care of your children at the same time is incredibly dangerous and irresponsible. Just ask Oklahoma mom Brennan Spencer. She made the choice to care for her newborn twins after a night of extreme drinking. Sadly, in her drunken state she apparently fell asleep holding the twins, and that decision resulted in the death of her young son.
Spencer, 33, was arrested in early July 2025 and charged with second-degree murder, KOCO reported. On November 2, 2024, her 2-month-old son, Rory Kelson, died after being accidentally suffocated in his sleep, according to the medical examiner. In his report, the medical examiner wrote that he believed “had the child been left in his bassinet,” the likelihood “of the child still being alive would have been increased.”
According to investigators, the baby’s father, James Kelson, was the one who called 911, KFOR reported. He told police that he found his son’s lifeless body at Spencer’s feet around 6:45 a.m. She was holding their daughter in her arms while she slept.

Kelson told investigators that he and Spencer had split a 12-pack of White Claws that night. He went to bed around 1 a.m., putting the twins to sleep in their bassinets.
Spencer told police that she later drove to 7-Eleven and picked up four “tall boy” White Claws, per KFOR. Investigators viewed security cameras of her leaving the store around 1:30 a.m. She also told them she sat down on the couch and fell asleep.
After being read her rights, Spencer told police she was “probably really drunk,” according to the arrest affidavit obtained by People. “I mean, I was drunk enough to just need to pass out,” she admitted.
In the affidavit, Deputy Chief Child Abuse Examiner Ryan Brown said the baby “was a victim of neglect” because of Spencer’s “level of intoxication.” Brown also pointed out the mom’s apparent altered “awareness levels.”
Spencer, who still hasn’t entered a plea in the case, still is in police custody. Her bail has been set at $500,000, per People. A preliminary hearing has been set for August 5.
