Donald Trump took credit for a major change to Coca-Cola’s beloved recipe. On July 16, the president took to Truth Social with an update on the popular soda brand.
“I have been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so. I’d like to thank all of those in authority at Coca-Cola,” Trump wrote in his update. “This will be a very good move by them — You’ll see. It’s just better!”
At the time, a spokesperson told CNN in a statement, “We appreciate President Trump’s enthusiasm for our iconic Coca-Cola brand. More details on new innovative offerings within our Coca-Cola product range will be shared soon.”
However, on July 22, the soda brand confirmed the recipe change — although it was more of an additional offering rather than an overhaul of the original.
“As part of its ongoing innovation agenda, this fall in the United States, the company plans to launch an offering made with U.S. cane sugar to expand its Trademark Coca-Cola product range,” The Coca-Cola Company said in a news release. “This addition is designed to complement the company’s strong core portfolio and offer more choices across occasions and preferences.”
On social media, many folks had the same reaction to the news that Coca-Cola — which is typically made with high-fructose corn syrup — will soon offer a version with cane sugar in the US. (Mexican Coca-Cola exported to the US uses cane sugar, and it’s already available at stores like Costco and Kroger.)
One X user shared: “No one cares about soda right now. RELEASE THE EPSTEIN FILES.”
Another echoed: “Nope, nobody cares. Release the Epstein clients.”
Someone else wrote: “Nobody was really asking for or thinking about this. Want to know what EVERYBODY is asking for and thinking about though?”
Meanwhile, others clamored for a change in the Coca-Cola packaging, with one commenting, “not finished … we want the glass bottles too.”
Yet another X user agreed, writing, “This is great. Now put it in a glass bottle.”
From his first term at the White House, Trump has made his love for Diet Coke known. He even had a “Diet Coke button” on the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office that brought him a prompt delivery of the fizzy beverage. It was reinstalled when Trump took office for his second term in January 2025.
