When news of Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman’s split first broke, many fans felt like the divorce came out of nowhere. But now, in retrospect, people are realizing that some signs were there. On September 30, Nicole officially filed for divorce and listed their date of separation as “date of filing,” E! News reported. However, the exes also signed a permanent parenting plan prior to filing for divorce, with Keith signing it on August 29 and Nicole signing it on September 6.
Nicole listed irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split, and E! News reported that they’ve been living separately for months now. They recently celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary, and many fans assumed they would be together forever. It’s only now that their split is official that people have noticed many instances in which Keith’s behavior seemed a bit… off.
In one instance, he seemed uninterested in talking about his marriage.
During an interview on the Australian radio show Jonesy & Amanda in September 2024, Keith was asked about his “amazing love story.” His response was less than amazing, and actually quite awkward. Host Amanda Keller had lots of questions about Keith’s marriage, and Keith gave very short responses before asking to move on.
Amanda asked Keith about the event he met Nicole at and questioned whether they would’ve “inevitably” met even if they hadn’t crossed paths there. Keith simply said, “Yeah, probably.” She then asked, “Are you a believer in fate? Or do you think it’s two Australians that would have happened?” Keith didn’t even appear to think about it before answering with, “No idea.” Eventually, he said, “Anyway, moving on!”
Fans who watched the clip noticed that Keith was obviously “uncomfortable.” One fan commented with, “He was so uncomfortable! I don’t know why they didn’t pick that up! His whole face changed when she brought up Nicole.”
Another fan called the clip “hard to watch” because Keith would’ve “gushed about” his wife in the past. “Oh no! Now we know it’s true!” they wrote. “’Anyway, moving on…’ OUCH 😫.” Several fans also pointed to Keith’s body language during the conversation. “Visibly uncomfortable from the first question!” one of them noticed. “The body language says it all! 😢”
More recently, he actually ended a call when asked about his wife.
Another awkward interview with Keith went viral in July 2025. At the time, Keith seemed so uncomfortable with an interview question that he actually exited the call, but because no one knew about his marital issues at the time, they assumed it was the nature of the question that might’ve bothered him. At the time, hosts Hayley Peterson and Max Burford from Mix 102.3’s Hayley & Max in the Morning asked the country singer about seeing his wife in steamy movies like Babygirl and A Family Affair.
Max asked him, “What does Keith Urban think when he sees his beautiful wife with beautiful younger men like Zac Efron having these beautiful love scenes on TV?” Instead of giving an awkward one-word answer, Keith simply left. “He’s just disconnected from Zoom,” a producer told the hosts. “I think his team hung up on us because they didn’t want us to ask that question.”
People also have questions about the way he celebrated his wedding anniversary this year.
On June 25, Nicole celebrated their wedding anniversary with a sweet Instagram post that she captioned, “Happy Anniversary Baby ❤️ @KeithUrban.” But now, people are noticing how Keith simply commented with a heart emoji and did not share his own anniversary post. For some people, that might be quite normal. Not everyone celebrates their relationship milestones publicly on social media. But on their wedding anniversary in 2024, Keith shared a photo of them together and captioned it with, “forever ❤️ happy anniversary.”
