Now that the news of Nicole Kidman‘s divorce from Keith Urban is out in the world, the Big Little Lies star isn’t shying away from talking about even her toughest moments. In a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Nicole opened up about the “insurmountable pain” she’s experienced and times she’s felt like a “broken” person in her life.
The topic came up when Nicole was asked how she feels about getting older, and the 58-year-old actress and mom said that she appreciates having been through a lot of experiences in the past that have allowed her more wisdom in coping with new situations she faces.
“The best part is the experiences that you’ve accumulated,” she said. “So you go, ‘Oh, I’ve been here before. I actually know how to handle this now.’ Or, ‘Maybe I haven’t been in this place, but I’ve experienced something similar to this, and I do know that I will get through it.'”
Nicole went on to say that having that wisdom allows her to know that “no matter how painful, or how difficult, or how devastating something is,” she will still be able to make it to the other side.
“You’re going to have to feel it,” she said. “You’re not going to be able to numb it. You are going to have to feel it, and it’s going to feel insurmountable at times. You’re going to feel like you’re broken, but if you move gently and slowly — and it can take an enormous amount of time — it does pass.”
It’s hard not to wonder if she had her split with Keith in mind when she was talking to the magazine. Their breakup is still fresh; Nicole filed for divorce on September 30, so it wouldn’t be surprising at all to find out she’s still going through a lot right now.
The interview wasn’t all about the tough stuff, though — Nicole also talked about what makes her feel “vibrant and energized,” and her children were at the top of her list.
“I’m grateful to be a part of this world,” she said. “I’m grateful to be surviving as a woman, as an actress, and as a producer, professionally and personally. Also, my children [give me the] purpose of being their protector and their guide, promising them that I’m here and that, no matter what, there’s always a safe place to grow up in.”
