On her polarizing Netflix show, With Love, Meghan, Meghan Markle gathers with friends and shares various hosting tips. If you’ve followed the show or her brand, As Ever, you might have noticed that she seems to forgo wearing shoes fairly often. This decision is actually quite intentional — to the point that some critics think it’s too intentional or even “calculated.” During a livestreamed conversation with friend Courtney Adamo, Meghan revealed that she goes barefoot to greet guests in attempt to make them feel more comfortable in her home.
According to Meghan, ‘everyone’s a little bit softened’ when she does this.
The reason Meghan’s hosting tip sounded strategic is because she has clear reasons for greeting her guests “barefoot” and with an “apron on.” It’s not because she just happens to be cooking without shoes on when her guests arrive. Instead, it’s because of how she thinks it will make her guests feel.
“It demystifies,” she said, per the Daily Mail. “People walk in and go, ‘Oh, she’s in this with me.’ And what are they drawn to? Your kitchen. They come right in, and suddenly everyone’s a little bit softened.”
Critics were not impressed by the tip.
They were not bothered by Meghan going barefoot in her own home. Instead, they were bothered by her reasoning. “That’s such a weird thing to say,” someone on Reddit wrote. “Just say, ‘I just like being barefoot in my own home.’ She always has to have some amazing grand reason for everything. On the other hand, if this is indeed true, that means she does it on purpose and tbh that’s even worse.”
Another person added, “I think everything she does is very calculated. She needs the publicity so she does these things so pictures get published and stories get written.”
Others thought Meghan was trying to make herself sound relatable by explaining why she goes barefoot, but it did not come across that way to them. “She thinks being barefoot brings her down to us commoners’ level,” a third critic wrote.
A fourth said, “I don’t have to break any barriers when people come to my house by being barefoot 🙄 and I don’t have to lull them into good feelings by pushing them into the kitchen. People just are welcome.”
The whole family seems to be ditching shoes more often.
Meghan is not the only person in her family who is often photographed without shoes on. Her 4-year-old daughter, Princess Lilibet, has been spotted barefoot as well. Meanwhile, Prince Harry made headlines when he appeared barefoot in a baby announcement photo in 2021. His feet seemed to distract people from the exciting news. “Congratulations Harry and Meghan… but serious, is there any need for Harry’s bare feet,” one person wrote at the time. Another person wrote, “Someone needs to buy Harry shoes. Ewwww, feet.”
More recently, Meghan shared a video from a trip to New York City. In one part of the video, which she posted on October 15, 2025, Harry stood in a doorway in gray sweatpants — and no shoes or socks. “Until the next time, NYC — thanks for the memories! You really know how to charm a gal),” Meghan captioned her post.
