What to Know
It seems like everyone has been talking about Wicked: For Good in the week since the sequel finally hit theaters — fans have been anticipating the movie starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande since the first one dropped last year.
And while the movie has been killing it in the box office, it’s definitely not a number one hit for one mom who took to Instagram to explain why she chose to walk out of the theater with her kids mid-movie, and she’s receiving a ton of backlash for her decision.
She was “shocked” by the movie.
She started out by explaining that she knows her reasoning for walking out of the movie could cause “controversy,” but in the end, it all came down to her faith and the way that she is choosing to raise her children with “conviction in their heart.”
Despite the fact that she said she usually loves musicals, Wicked: For Good took things a step too far, in her opinion.
She felt like Wicked: For Good was “casting legit spells” on her family.
“I am not sitting in a movie that is casting legit spells over me and my family and allowing my children to watch scenes where men are sexually taking off women’s clothing and music that is talking about them laying in bed together,” she wrote.
She added, “I have a feeling that the spells cast in this movie weren’t just some made up words… they had purpose in them! The Bible tells us to stay far away from that and my children even looked at me with big eyes and felt uncomfortable in certain parts of the movie. The mom gut knew it was time to walk out.”
Several people are now encouraging her to “touch some grass.”
This mom ended her post by writing, “This is our personal conviction and I we feel strongly about things our girls watch and the spirits we allow in us,” adding that she was glad to be able to model having “the courage to walk away” for her daughters. But according to the comments, people aren’t exactly touched by her story.
“Goes to a movie about magic and witches — panics when witches do magic,” one commenter wrote. “Girl pls go outside and touch some grass nobody is performing spells on you.”
Others felt the post was performative. “Why wouldn’t you research it ahead of time if you have concerns about content? Common Sense Media is a great resource. But I guess then you don’t get to make a post about it,” one person wrote.
As parents, it’s our job to decide which media is safe for our kids to consume, and for many, Wicked: For Good was the perfect movie to see in theaters as a family. For this mom, it wasn’t — but it is a bit surprising that she feels so strongly about the themes in the movie and didn’t bother researching it more first?
