Unseen Oprah Interview Clip Finally Explains What Meghan & Harry Meant by Wanting Privacy

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their decision to walk away from royal life in 2020, seeking a more private way of living. So when they sat down for a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey one year later, a lot of people were left confused — if they wanted privacy so badly, why are they on TV with Oprah?

Now, a clip that didn’t air when the original interview did is out there, and it puts everything they’ve been saying into a lot more context. Seriously, if they had just included this clip in the broadcast, a lot of people could have saved a lot of time arguing…

Oprah questioned why Meghan and Harry expected to have privacy as royals in the first place.

This clip SHOULD have been included in the Oprah interview cause it contextualizes exactly what Prince Harry and Meghan have been saying all along…

The clip resurfaced in a post on Reddit this week, with the OP explaining that it should have been included in the full two-hour version of the interview that aired on CBS. While it wasn’t part of the broadcast, it was shared as an exclusive clip on OprahMag.com after the special premiered.

In the clip, Oprah is talking about Meghan’s decision to date a member of the royal family when she asks her, “Shouldn’t you have an expectation that you’re going to have to lose privacy? That’s part of the deal.”

Meghan explained exactly what she meant by wanting more privacy, and it actually made a lot of sense.

While Meghan seemed to believe that Oprah’s point was reasonable, she had her own take on it.

“I think everyone has a basic right to privacy. Basic. We’re not talking about anything that anybody else wouldn’t expect,” she said.

Then, she explained what she meant in better detail in a way that might help people understand what she’s going through.

“If you’re at work and you have a photograph of your child on your desk, and your coworker says, ‘Oh, my gosh, your kid’s so cute. That’s fantastic! Can I see your phone so I can see all the pictures of your child?’ You go, ‘No. This is the picture I’m comfortable sharing with you,'” she said. “And then if they double down and say, ‘No, but you already showed me that one. So you have to show me everything. You know what, I’m just gonna hire someone to sit in front of your house, or hide in the bushes and take pictures into your backyard, because you’ve lost your right to privacy… because you shared one image with me.'”

When she puts it that way, it really drives the point home just how violated she and Harry must have felt, especially after Archie (and later, Lili) was born.

Meghan claimed she never actually asked for privacy.

Instead, she just wanted to be able to share the parts of her life she felt “comfortable” sharing, just like anyone else would.

“There’s no one who’s on Instagram or social media that would say, ‘Because I shared this one picture, that entitles you to have my entire camera roll. Go ahead and look through it.’ No one would want that,” she said. “So it’s about boundaries. And it’s about respect.”

It sounds like she and Harry finally did find that — even if it took moving to another country to make it happen. But this really does put it all into perspective, doesn’t it?
