What to Know
Meghan Markle has been finding a lot of success with her brand, As Ever, which launched last year. Her jams, honey, and similar products related to entertaining have quickly sold out as soon as they come back in stock, and now she has another unexpected success on her hands — albeit one that she’s already catching flak for.
After launching her new bookmarks that come with a double-digit price tag, Meghan is being called out for being “out of touch.” But she can’t be that out of touch, because somehow, the pricy bookmarks sold out on her website almost immediately as they went on sale.
Meghan dropped new As Ever products on Tuesday.
On January 13, As Ever launched some new products, including the bookmark by itself as well as included in a set called “A Moment to Unwind” that comes with Meghan’s Sage Honey with Honeycomb and her take on peppermint tea.
The bookmark is a limited edition product described as “bespoke” and priced at $18. It’s made in the UK from genuine black leather, and in Meghan’s handwriting, it says in shiny gold, “(fell asleep here).”
Some people truly weren’t impressed with the bookmark.
After the bookmark became available, the site Women.com called Meghan out for being especially “out of touch” by selling this product at such a high price point.
“While the high price point likely offsets the quality materials, as well as the fact that the bookmark is made by hand in the UK, it feels like another instance of Markle being weirdly out-of-touch with the real world,” the site criticized. “After all, it costs several times what the average person is likely used to spending on a bookmark.”
On X, Meghan had plenty of other naysayers, with one writing, “A humble bookmark has now been anointed with the rare and precious gift of Meghan’s own handwriting. Peasants, prepare to swoon in gratitude!! FFS! The pretentiousness, self-idolization and worship this woman has for herself is truly mind-blowing!”
Despite how some might have felt, the bookmark was a huge success.
When it comes to her As Ever line, it certainly seems like Meghan has more fans than haters. The $18 bookmark was sold out in a matter of minutes, while the full gift set, priced at $64, disappeared shortly afterwards.
For as many trolls as Meghan might have, her brand has been a huge success so far. Maybe she actually does know what she’s doing.
