Police are looking for answers after a teenage girl died in a deadly vehicle accident in San Antonio, Texas. For reasons that are still unclear, the girl was outside her apartment complex in the early morning when it was still dark. Currently, there is speculation among neighbors about what may have made her go outside, but it’s still just hearsay and chatter. While the teen was outside, she was reportedly struck and killed by a garbage truck. It’s easy to forget that things are happening when many of us are still asleep. Because the accident occurred before people are usually up and outside, it is unknown exactly how long her body was there before she was found.
The incident took place in the early morning hours of February 9, 2026, about 5:30, both WOAI and KENS reported. However, police officers weren’t called to the Camaron Townhomes and Flats until 6:10 a.m., according to KENS.
San Antonio Police Department officer Nicholas Evans said witnesses told investigators the girl, who was believed to be a resident of the apartment complex, was hit by a vehicle. The driver was gone before police arrived. Police identified the driver later in the morning and the person hadn’t even realized a deadly accident had taken place.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s office identified the girl, who was declared dead at the scene, as 15-year-old Ziba Mir Shadad, KENS reported. Shadad was a tenth grader at John Marshall High School, North Side Independent School District official Barry Perez confirmed.
According to a report obtained by People, the police department noted that she was hit by a garbage truck on its normal morning route.
“Officers were informed that the garbage truck was heading southbound from a trash pick-up in a residential area on a private road,” the report read. It added that the girl jumped out “in front of the garbage truck and then behind the garbage truck.” She was hit when she jumped behind the garbage truck.
Sgt. Rogelio Cardenas told KENS that emergency personnel found the teen. Investigators believe her body may have been in the parking lot for an hour or more before she was discovered. Police have not found any witnesses who saw the deadly accident.
“After looking at some video, it’s apparent that it is not criminal. We have the person that hit her and it doesn’t appear that he knew what was going on,” Cardenas said.
Police said they’re in contact with the girl’s family and her death remains under investigation.
