As if singer, Katy Perry, hasn’t had enough bad press as of late, it seems that those bricks just keep piling up. An Australia-based fashion designer named Katie Perry has won her High Court appeal case against the pop star after the singer claimed that the clothing brand caused confusion for those looking to purchase Katy Perry’s tour merchandise. Seriously, Katy? This whole thing sounds like such a waste of lawyer’s fees!

According to BBC, an Australian designer named Katie Perry has officially won her High Court appeal against recording artist, Katy Perry, in a trademark case that went on for years. The designer successfully sued Katy a couple of years ago for selling merchandise during a 2014 Australia tour, but the ruling was overturned in 2024 with the designer’s trademark cancelled.
Katie Perry, who has since changed her last name to Taylor, won her appeal after the court found that “Perry’s reputation was so well-established in Australia that anyone seeing Taylor’s clothing brand would not confuse the two names.” That seems totally right.
The BBC reported that in 2009, Katy Perry’s lawyers asked Taylor to stop using her brand and “signalled plans to oppose a trademark application but later dropped legal action.”
Hmmmm… that’s all very interesting, isn’t it?
Katie Perry had some things to say about her appeal case against the singer.
The woman behind the fashion brand, Katie Perry, read a statement was recently shared on this Reddit thread.
In her statement, she remarked on how “many people have described this case as a David and Goliath battle. A small Australian business defeating and defending its intellectual property against a global celebrity brand.” We’re looking at you, Katy Perry!
The designed also shared how this whole thing has been “an incredibly long and really difficult journey.” She happily confirmed that when given the news that she won her appeal, she knew this case worked to show that “trademarks matter for all and they’re there to protect businesses of all sizes.”
Since the news broke, the designer has been shown all sorts of support from people around the world who have been championing her fashion business all along. One person commented on a Katie Perry Clothing post on Instagram and said, “I can’t imagine how unnecessary and stressful this must have been! Glad it’s finally over for you.”
We’re betting that Katie is finally able to let out a huge sigh of relief now.
People are dragging Katy Perry in the comments for even doing something like this in the first place.
People in the Reddit comments really could not even fathom how something like this appeal case, especially with a millionaire like Katy Perry on the other side of things went on for so long.
One person commented on how they find the whole thing to just be “sad.” They wrote, “This is actually a sad story. Small business Katie had over a decade of legal battle just to keep her business name? Did Katie get any award money for fighting this and winning the case? OR did winning the case just meant keeping her business? I feel like Katy’s team launched an attack on Katie and lost but the result was “sorry, never mind” NOT “sorry, here’s $5 Million Katie for the trouble””. Katie Perry totally deserves some kind of compensation for any damages and lawyers fees.
Another individual in the comment section called this appeal case ridiculous considering that Katy Perry is just a stage name. “I think the funniest part about this is Katy Perry is literally just a stage name. Perry is her mother’s maiden name and she chose it because her actual name, Katy Hudson, would have been too close to Kate Hudson’s.” This person is correct, as Billboard confirms that Katy Perry’s real name is Katheryn Hudson. So insane.
Someone kept things pretty simple with their comment and stated that “the better Katie Perry won.” Touché!
