Texas Mom Charged After Tests Reveal 2 Daughters Who Died in Backyard Pool Had Cocaine in Their Systems

In normal circumstances, our hearts would immediately go out to a mother who lost not one but two young daughters in what appeared to be a horrible accident. But when you discover other factors were involved, it often takes away a lot of that empathy. A Texas mother has been charged for her alleged involvement in the death of her two daughters under the age of 3. Authorities discovered cocaine in both of their systems at the time of death. Originally, it was thought the sisters drowned in the backyard pool, but it seems drugs also played a factor.

A Texas mother has been charged in connection with the deaths of her two daughters.

According to ABC 13, on May 8, 2026, 23-year-old mother Laura Nicholson was charged with two counts of injury to a child after the death of her two daughters in Katy, Texas, in February 2026.

On May 11, Harris County Sheriff, Ed Gonzalez shared an update on X on the death of the 3- and 2-year-old sisters found dead at a residence in the 21000 block of Creek Edge Court.

He shared that the investigation had determined the young sisters both had “cocaine in their systems at the time of their passing,” which led to the girls’ mother facing charges.

How unbelievably horrifying.

Previously, it was thought the girls had died by drowning.

On May 11, the Violent Criminals Apprehension Team with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office coordinated with the Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force, which arrested Nicholson in Florida and booked her in Lee County Jail, per the statement on X.

According to court records, the autopsies of the sisters were completed on April 30, and the medical examiner found the primary cause of death to be “drowning and acute cocaine toxicity,” per ABC 13.

Investigators said Nicholson told them that she was asleep inside the house when the children were discovered in the pool, ABC 13 reported. The mother said she was aware the latch to the door didn’t work and that the girls often got out and made their way to the pool.

People previously reported that the girls snuck outside from the patio door while their grandmother, who also lived on the property, was at the grocery store and their mother and grandfather were asleep.

The girls were described as ‘beacons of joy’ with laughter that ‘echoed.’

According to their obituary, Nicholson’s daughters’ names were Kinsey and Kelsey Kite and they were born in Houston, Texas.

The obituary states that their untimely deaths have left behind “a tapestry of cherished memories woven into the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing them.”

The two siblings were described as “beacons of joy” with “everlasting smiles” and “playful spirits” that “filled rooms with happiness, reminding us all of the beauty found in simple pleasures,” the obituary reads.

Nicholson is waiting to be extradited to Harris County, Texas, KWTX reported. The investigation remains ongoing.

Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Kinsey and Kelsey Kite. May they find some sense of healing and justice now that the person responsible is going to be held accountable for their deaths.
