Issac Tracy called the police on February 10, 2026, and reportedly made a bizarre confession. The 17-year-old told dispatchers he wanted to be arrested for killing his mother, 49-year-old Katharine Svaldi, at their Fayetteville, North Carolina, residence. Police arrived to a grisly scene at a home in the 1900 block of Daphne Circle. They found Svaldi’s body in the garage with multiple wounds. Months later, court documents shed light on the mother’s final moments.
Tracy reportedly left a note at the scene.
According to court documents obtained by WTVD, Tracy allegedly wrote a letter outlining why he killed his mother. When he called 911, Tracy reportedly said, “he wanted to get himself arrested — because he killed his mom.” Police reported finding the mother’s battered body inside a recycling bin.
An autopsy revealed Tracy beat his mother with a frying pan before dragging her through the home and into the garage, where he allegedly stabbed Svaldi multiple times, WRAL reported. The teenager evidently confessed to his grandparents. Fayetteville police arrested Tracy at his grandparents’ house shortly afterward.
The story shocked many who know the family.
Neighbor Diana Konitzer told police she couldn’t believe such a horrible crime occurred so close to home. “Can you imagine… to kill your mom. That’s very sad,” she told WTVD.
Kirsten, a close friend of Svaldi, told the news outlet off camera that she could hardly believe what she heard about Tracy and Svaldi.
“When I finally found out that it was her, devastated, heartbroken, you know, nobody deserves to lose their life like that at anybody’s hands. And I just hurt for her and her family, and I hurt for her son,” Kirsten said.
Though she will miss her friend dearly, she asked that people refrain from judging Tracy too harshly.
“I just want people to not judge. We don’t know where anyone or any family is going through, and to speculate on what either one of them could have been, is not needed,” she said.
Loved ones created a GoFundMe account for Svaldi’s family.
Cheryl Dillman remembered Svaldi as a devoted mother who did her best to give her children everything she could, especially love.
“No matter where Katie lived, she’d make time for family and friends. Katie lived a life full of love and devotion. She could talk your ear off or just sit and listen to you talk,” Dillman wrote on the page. “She loved her family and friends with her whole heart. She was accepting of others choices and beliefs. She wanted all to feel included,” she added.
“She always loved to dance, spend time with family and friends, travel, and her fur babies,” Dillman continued. “She would do anything to help her family or friends. She was a light to so many of us. She leaves behind a huge hole in the lives of so many but especially her mother and children.”
Tracy faces a first-degree murder charge in his mother’s death. Though he apparently left a note, the contents and a motive remain a mystery. He apparently had self-inflicted injuries when he arrived at his grandparents’ home. Sadly, it seems this story could have been much worse. Per North Carolina law, Tracy faces charges as an adult.
