It seemed like there was no way Meghan Markle and the kids were going to make it to the UK during Prince Harry‘s visit earlier this month, but somehow, they did — at the absolute last minute, of course.
And while the details about how all of this went down are still coming out, a source close to Meghan is saying that she was “humiliated” by the entire fiasco, and the trip turned into a “nightmare” situation for her.
The week didn’t get off to a very good start for Harry.
Not only was he unable to get the security he felt he needed to be able to safely bring his family to the UK in the first place, but his invitation to stay at Buckingham Palace was revoked just after he’d agreed to stay there. And then, as he arrived, he found out he lost his tabloid lawsuit, so it’s safe to say that it probably wasn’t the trip he was imagining it would be from the start.
Instead, Harry stayed at Althorp, which is Princess Diana‘s childhood home and burial spot, and carried on with his business while he was in town, which mostly involved the Invictus Games.
Eventually, Meghan, Archie, and Lili were able to join the trip — but it doesn’t sound like it was under the best of circumstances.
Royal expert Russell Myers told People, “What was billed as a big homecoming—not only for Harry but potentially for Meghan too—turned into a nightmare. It was further evidence of the fractiousness of Harry’s relationship with the institution.”
Sources close to Meghan and Harry told the outlet that Meghan, who is “very supportive” of her husband, would have felt “humiliated” by the way things went down as they tried to figure out how to spend time with King Charles, adding that “there’s a lot of sadness” about the situation.
If the royals had worked with Harry to figure out the security issues, none of this would have been a problem, according to what another source told People.
“This is not the first time it has not been plain sailing with correspondence or trying to make things work,” the insider said. “It all comes back to security. If that was resolved, there would be so much more certainty every time he comes—or they come.”
Even though he’s on speaking terms with Charles, it doesn’t sound like Harry’s relationship with his brother is getting any better.
One source described the state of Harry and William’s relationship today as “so broken,” while another confirmed they aren’t speaking.
“I thought it would have perhaps eased a little bit by now, to be honest. But there has been no movement, especially on William’s side,” the second insider said. “There is no contact.”
Maybe William will be more willing to come around if Harry continues working to mend the relationship between him and his father?
