What to Know
Looking back on Keeping Up With the Kardashians, there are a lot of iconic moments — Khloé going to jail, Kim’s weddings, Kourtney and Scott’s on-again, off-again relationship — but one always stands out among the rest: the time Kim lost her diamond earring in the ocean and lost her mind.
History has remembered her as dramatic for the way that situation played out, but now, people are rethinking what actually happened that day, and maybe she wasn’t wrong to freak out to the level that she did.
Kim and the fam were on a tropical vacation when she lost her earring.
This video of Kim Kardashian crying over her $75K diamond earring sinking in the ocean while Kourtney Kardashian casually says "Kim, there's people that are dying" will forever be one of the funniest and most chaotic moments in reality TV history 😭💀😂 pic.twitter.com/nwQmWh90Hx

Recently, the clip of Kim losing her earring during season 6 of the long running reality series has resurfaced on X, and now it’s going viral all over again.
For those who didn’t watch KUWTK (or forgot the finer details of an episode of television that aired 15 years ago), the Kardashians — and Kris Humphries, who Kim was just starting to date at the time — were in Bora Bora on a family vacation when Kris picked Kim up and threw her into the water.
As soon as she came up for air, Kim realized that her earring was missing and proceeds to burst into tears. After she gets out of the water, Kourtney asks her what’s wrong, and Kim fills her in. This is the moment that Kourtney got to lay down her unforgettable line: “Kim, there’s people that are dying.”
Kim’s freakout was always seen as totally over the top, but was it really?
One post with a different take on Kim’s meltdown is going viral.
I always thought this scene was interpreted backwards because if Kim was truly spoilt, she would not care about losing $75k diamonds. Caring about losing such an expensive thing indicates she understands its value even if she is not significantly impacted financially by its loss. https://t.co/25QP5f4Uba

One person shared the clip with a different point of view on the whole situation: Kim being so distraught over losing her earring is actually proof that she isn’t as ungrateful for what she has as people might believe.
“I always thought this scene was interpreted backwards because if Kim was truly spoilt, she would not care about losing $75k diamonds,” the fan wrote. “Caring about losing such an expensive thing indicates she understands its value even if she is not significantly impacted financially by its loss.”
She might actually have a point here…
A lot of people seem to agree: Kim losing it is actually really relatable.
As one person who came to Kim’s defense wrote, “I always felt bad for her in this scene because she clearly didn’t want to be thrown into the water and he threw her in. He was rough with her and she probably spent all sorts of time trying to look nice, picking out jewelry she would not wear in the ocean. It reminds me of when grooms push cake into their wives faces when they don’t want the cake in their face.”
And to be clear, owning a $75k earring isn’t relatable whatsoever, but bursting into tears because you lost something so expensive? That is. In fact, most of us have cried over losing things with far less cash value.
Kourtney wasn’t wrong: There are people that are dying. But does that mean Kim shouldn’t panic if she lost a diamond in the ocean worth five figures?
