A Texas woman has been captured almost 30 years after she allegedly killed her young daughter. Maria Narez was found in Mexico many decades after she first fled to the country to escape being arrested for her daughter’s death.
Narez was accused of killing her three-year-old daughter Kassandra White by physically assaulting the child. She was indicted on a capital murder charge, and that is when she disappeared. It is unclear how she managed to get out of the country at the time. And no one reported how she evaded the law for three decades. But now, she has been found and will face consequences for her crimes.
Authorities were able to find the woman and finally arrested her.
The Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office shared that they had finally captured Narez on their Facebook page on August 10.
“Before the case could go to trial, Narez fled and has remained a fugitive for decades. She was arrested Saturday in Mexico,” they wrote.
“The DA’s office never gave up on bringing Narez back to face the charge against her and answer for the death of her daughter,” they continued. They went on to thank Mexico Interpol, the U.S. Marshals Mexico Foreign Field Office, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of Justice-Office of International Affairs, DA Investigators Tiffany Johnson and Victor Espino-Nevarez, and Assistant DA Steven Elliott for working together to catch Narez.
“Their tireless work ensures this decades-old case was not forgotten — and neither was the pursuit of justice,” they wrote.
The DA’s Office failed to disclose the details of what led to Narez’s capture, and how they were finally able to catch her after nearly three decades on the run.
After being arrested, Maria Narez managed to escape and leave the country.
The woman, who is now 48, was originally arrested in 1996 in Tarrant County FOX 4 News reported. Authorities alleged that she killed her daughter. According to court documents, Narez intentionally caused her daughter’s death by shaking her, throwing her into a wall, striking her with an unknown object and causing her head to hit the door.
She was indicted by a Tarrant County grand jury on a capital murder charge in April 1997. But after her bond was reduced to $25,000 by a judge, Narez failed to appear for court proceedings later that year.
A warrant for her arrest was issued in late 1997 after her bond was forfeited. But she had left the country, and would remain a fugitive for the next nearly 30 years.
Maria Narez will be extradited back to Tarrant County to face the capital murder charge.
