Conservatives Are Mad at Elmo Now

The conservative backlash surrounding Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime performance hasn’t totally died down yet, and now, some MAGA supporters are taking their anger out on Elmo (Yes, really). After the halftime show, the X account representing the beloved Sesame Street character praised Bad Bunny’s performance. Apparently, this really bothered some people.

In a seemingly innocent and harmless post, Elmo said, “That Bunny was AMAZING. Elmo thinks he should be called Good Bunny! Elmo loves you, Mr. Good Bunny!”

It’s debatably not all that serious, but people’s responses were.

That one post from Elmo’s account left people saying things like “society is going to hell.” Many of the critics expressed concerns about Bad Bunny’s lyrics and suggested that they weren’t appropriate for children. “Would you say his lyrics to children in English?” one person questioned Elmo. Another wrote, “No child should have been allowed to listen to that vile offensive language. You represent a child’s icon. This is a disgraceful post.” Some of the criticism was even more intense.

Those who were mad about the post called it “disturbing” or even “evil,” for some reason. Several people tried pushing Elmo to share the English translation of Bad Bunny’s lyrics, and others started attacking the Muppet, telling him that he’s “not real,” too “woke,” and the worst Muppet of all time. Harsh. “I used to think you were the worst Muppet,” one of them wrote to Elmo directly. “Now I know it.” Someone else said, “This is why we stopped allowing our children to watch Sesame Street.”

And sure, some Bad Bunny lyrics might not be the most appropriate for young children — totally fair (though how many kids are actually following Elmo on X anyway?). But the outrage definitely was not just about Bad Bunny’s lyrics, as many conservatives have complained about him performing in Spanish and not supporting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Some MAGA supporters (including those who were mad at Elmo) have even tried to say that Bad Bunny is not American, or that the show was anti-American, even though he is from Puerto Rico.

But others found Elmo’s post “wholesome” and told people to stop attacking Elmo.

Can’t a Muppet have opinions about the halftime show? Apparently, this is a really contentious debate. Some people clearly think Elmo has no business commenting on the halftime performance, while others really appreciated the fact that he did. “Do not come on this thread to attack Elmo just becuz your taste in music is different,” one person wrote, addressing all the critics. “Elmo’s pure, he’s the best of us. Just let that be.”

And someone else said, “Elmo’s right! ‘Good Bunny’ definitely fits after that show. It’s pure magic seeing two global icons sharing the love today.”

And while critics argued that the lyrics weren’t “family-friendly,” others argued that Elmo was sharing a powerful message with his followers. “You’re a real one, Elmo! Thank you for being a role model for promoting love & acceptance!” one of them commented.
