When celebrities have babies, we don't blink when they reveal the unique or unusual name they've given to their baby. Stormi, Dream, Reign, and North are all unusual names in the same family.
There's also X Æ A-12, Exa Dark, Mint, Blue, Kulture, Gravity, and Raddix. From there, the list goes on, and it's expected now for famous folk to be more creative than simply looking at lists of the top baby names.
But before all these babies, there was one name that seemed to spark the trend.
They certainly were not the first to give their baby an interesting name – that's been happening since the dawn of time. But with social media making it easier for people to share their unsolicited opinions, in 2004, when Gwyneth and then-husband Chris Martin announced the birth of their first child, their name choice created a lot of buzz.
The proud parents (who "consciously uncoupled" in 2016) declared they were "900 miles over the moon" at the time after welcoming their first child to the world. Gwyneth and Chris shared that their daughter weighed 9 lb. 11 oz., and they had named her Apple Blythe Alison Martin.
Apple for a baby name is a tame choice these days, but it wasn't back then.
At the time, although unique baby names certainly happened, Apple caused quite the stir. It's hard to know exactly why – whether they expected Gwyneth and Chris to go more traditional or if it really was the name of the fruit that set people off.
But 17 years ago, people were baffled. These days, Apple still makes every unusual baby name list, though is now far from the biggest surprise when it comes to a celebrity's choice for a moniker.
Recently, though, Gwyneth shared the story behind her daughter's name.
During a Q&A on the star's Instagram Stories, she gave a little insight into how Apple got her unique name.
One fan jumped at the "Ask me a question" prompt and used the opportunity to ask about her daughter's name.
"How did you come up with Apple," the person asked. "No offense, just wondering."
The story behind the name is simple: Chris liked the name.
"Her dad came up with the name," she wrote in response to the question, adding, "and I fell in love with it."
The fact the name is unique was a selling point too.
"I thought it was original and cool," Gwyneth added. "I can't imagine her being called anything else."
In 2006, when Gwyneth and Chris welcomed their second child, a boy, people were curious about what his name would be. People likely assumed they'd go no-traditional again, perhaps another food or something equally unique.
But the parents went a different direction, naming their son Moses, a nod to a song Chris wrote for Gwyneth a few years before. His full name is Moses Bruce Anthony Martin.
