Jamie's new comedy special premiered on Tuesday.
Titled Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was …, the special includes a focus on the scary health crisis the comedian faced in 2023 that left fans fearing for his life. Opening up about what happened was an emotional moment, as Jamie told his audience that he had suffered a brain bleed that led to a stroke.
After one doctor gave him a cortisone shot and sent him on his way, Jamie went to another Atlanta hospital.
At Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, a doctor told Jamie’s sister, Deidra Dixon, that he would need surgery right away, explaining, “Heâs having a brain bleed that has led to a stroke. If I donât go in his head right now, weâre going to lose him.”
Following surgery, they gave her another grim update: âWe didnât find where it was coming from, but he is having a stroke. He may be able to make a full recovery but itâs going to be the worst year of his life.â
He said he felt 'oddly peaceful' during this time.
Still, it would take 20 days before Jamie finally woke up at a Chicago rehab center, and at that point, he was surprised to discover he needed to use a wheelchair â a realization that he said felt “like a f—ing prank.â At that point, he was unable to do anything himself, including bathing and using the bathroom.

It was a dark time for Jamie.
âI lost everything, but the only thing I could hold onto was my sense of humor,â he said. âIf I could stay funny, I could stay alive.â
He didn’t even want his youngest daughter, 14-year-old Anelise Bishop, to see him that way, but despite his best efforts to keep her away, she still managed to sneak into his hospital room with her guitar, where she played music with her dad. Anelise also joined Jamie on stage during the special to play a duet with him.
As he recovered, his family ensured he had his privacy.
The reason Jamie didn’t update fans after his stroke? His sister and older daughter, Corinne Foxx, made sure he could have his privacy.
âThey didnât want you to see me like that. And I didnât want you to see me like that,â he told the audience. “I want you to see me like this.â
