Kylie Jenner Critics Say She’s Trying To ‘Show Off’ by Paying for Her Hairstylist’s Funeral

On Sunday, February 23, the family of celebrity hairstylist Jesus Guerrero announced that he had died at age 34. Guerrero worked with celebrity clients such as Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, Demi Moore, and Kylie Jenner, even referring to Kylie as “my main girly” in a social media post less than one month before his death. Kylie reportedly plans to cover her hairstylist’s funeral expenses, and while some fans have called her a “sweetheart” for doing so, critics have questioned the Kardashians star.

Guerrero’s family started a GoFundMe.

According to Guerrero’s younger sister, his death occurred “very suddenly and unexpectedly.”

“It is with a heavy heart that we let the world know that Jesus Guerrero has gone to heaven,” Gris Guerrero wrote on GoFundMe. “He is a son, a brother, an uncle, an artist, a friend, and so much more. Born and raised in Houston, TX to immigrant parents, Jesus learned how to work hard and dreamt of taking his skills to the top.”

The hairstylist’s sister explained that “his family is taking care of his personal belongings and accommodations to bring him home to Houston.” His cause of death was not mentioned.

Kylie Jenner reportedly plans to cover his funeral expenses.

A source told People that “Jesus’ death hit [Kylie] hard.” At the same time, she reportedly wants to support his family because she knows “it’s so much worse for his family.” The insider claimed that Kylie “doesn’t want them to stress about money,” so “she’s taking care of expenses, including those associated with his funeral.”

TMZ also reported that Kylie is helping his family and comforting them.

Some fans praised Kylie for helping the family during this incredibly challenging time.

“I’m really glad she stepped in and is covering the cost especially for someone who she was very close to,” one person wrote on Reddit. Another fan called Kylie “a sweetheart.” A third fan focused on how Kylie’s support will give the family “one less thing” to worry about as they grieve.

“I’m glad there will be one less thing for his family to worry about financially,” they wrote. “It’s a gesture that takes something off their full plates right now.”

However, others were more critical.

Not everyone was impressed by what some fans thought was a “very nice” gesture. Some fans seemed to know that people would still find a way to criticize Kylie.

“Gonna be interesting to see the ways they find to hate on Kylie for that,” one person wrote. In response, a naysayer said “she’s only doing it for pr and to show [off].”

One person called out “these billionaires who are literally famous for their appearance” and wondered why Guerrero’s family would need to start a GoFundMe to cover funeral expenses if he was “instrumental” to Kylie’s career. Some critics asserted that Kylie “clearly wasn’t paying him enough if she has to cover the costs of his funeral.”

However, others pointed out that the situation is more nuanced than that. One person compared people’s criticism of Kylie to the way people hate on Meghan Markle: “If she does nothing she’s insensitive, if she does something she’s attention seeking/making it all about her.”

In 2021, Kylie sparked backlash when she encouraged fans to donate to a makeup artist.

When makeup artist Samuel Rauda got into a car accident, Kylie shared the link to the family’s GoFundMe. Fans couldn’t believe that she would ask her fans to donate when she has so much money herself. Kylie later clarified that Samuel “isn’t my makeup artist” and that they didn’t have “a personal relationship anymore.”

That controversy might explain why some Keeping Up With the Kardashians fans suspected that Kylie would share the link to her hairstylist’s GoFundMe instead of supporting the family herself. However, Guerrero started working with Kylie in 2019, and they became friends. Not long before his death, on February 12, Kylie shared a photo of her and Guerrero via Instagram. An insider told People that Kylie is “shocked and very upset” about her hairstylist’s death.
