Sometimes, three’s a crowd. Mary-Kate Olsen had to learn this the hard way when her ex-husband, Olivier Sarkozy, moved his ex-wife and children into their home at the start of the pandemic in 2020.
Olivier was married to Charlotte Bernard for 14 years before divorcing in 2010. The couple shares two children. Mary-Kate and Olivier met and started dating in 2012, before getting engaged in 2014 and tying the knot in 2015. Mary-Kate filed for divorce in May 2020 after five years of marriage after Olivier decided to move his ex-wife, their children, and his mother into the home that he shared with Mary-Kate to keep them protected during the beginning of the pandemic.
That may not be the main reason for their split, but it definitely didn’t help things …

It's an extremely awkward situation to be in.
A source told Page Six that though Mary-Kate filed for divorce in late May 2020, the couple had actually split in April 2020 as Olivier expressed a desire to move everyone into the home they shared.
"Olivier was concerned for the safety of his family in New York during the pandemic. He insisted to Mary-Kate that he wanted to bring his ex-wife, their kids and his mother from the city, to their Bridgehampton home," the source said.
Their home was a five-bedroom mansion that was 4,000 square feet.
There's only so much a person can take.

"Maybe French people culturally have a different view of marriage, and while Mary-Kate loves his children, it was too much to have his ex-wife living with them during the pandemic," the source explained.
"Would you want the ex-wife living with you for an unforeseeable amount of time in the middle of a crisis?"
There is only so much a person can take. And it seems that Olivier was ready to move them in as soon as Mary-Kate moved out.
Olivier and his ex-wife maintained a relationship because of their children.

The source was quick to add that the relationship between Olivier and his first ex-wife was platonic and that his concern really was about COVID.
"It was not uncommon for Charlotte to be around and stay in a separate bedroom in the Hamptons on holidays or birthdays," the insider said. "They have two kids and have always put them first. In their French way, family comes first, even with a divorce. Charlotte was even at Olivier’s wedding to Mary-Kate."
Charlotte's arrival was the 'final straw' for Mary-Kate.
So even though Charlotte’s arrival may not have been the reason for the divorce, it was reportedly the "final straw" for Mary Kate, who moved into a rental home in the Hamptons.
Some sources said that Olivier took issue with Mary-Kate’s work as a fashion designer, claiming he wanted a wife who was more "available."
In April 2020, Mary-Kate filed a petition for divorce, going so far as to request an emergency divorce from Olivier.
The pair were divorced in 2021.
She shared that he had terminated the lease on the New York City apartment they shared without telling her, leaving her trying to move in the middle of the city’s stay-at-home order.
"I am petrified that my husband is trying to deprive me of the home that we have lived in and if he is successful, I will not only lose my home but I risk losing my personal property as well," Mary-Kate shared in an affidavit.
The couple’s divorce was finalized in January 2021. Thanks to their prenup, none of Mary-Kate’s money, an estimated $250 million, was touched.
