As fans wait to find out Matthew Perry's official cause of death, one person who was once close to the former Friends star is speaking out. In a new interview, Matthew's ex-girlfriend, Kayti Edwards, has said that she believes Matthew may have relapsed before his death, because according to her, something just isn't adding up about the way he died last month while in his hot tub at his Los Angeles home.

Matthew and Kayti dated back in 2006.
They originally met through her grandfather, director Blake Edwards, and later ran into each other at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, where they reconnected. Though it's been more than a decade since they dated, she did say that they spoke last year after he released his memoir, Friends, Lovers, & the Big Terrible Thing.
She believes Matthew may have relapsed in the time before his death.
Though Matthew has been open about his battle with addiction, he did say that he had been sober for 18 months when he released his memoir last year, and no illegal substances were found at his home at the time of his death. But Kayti still seems convinced that something was amiss.
"I don’t believe he just drowned in his Jacuzzi, that doesn’t sound right. I know Matthew and I know that he wouldn’t have just drowned," she said in an interview with The UK Sun.
"I think he might have taken pills in the week leading up to this. They said there were no prescription painkillers at the scene, which doesn’t surprise me, because he didn’t leave drugs lying around. He was paranoid and would take them all, so there wasn’t any evidence, and then go out for more when he was ready to."
She says there was a telltale sign in his final social media post.
He shared a photo from his jacuzzi just days before his death, writing, "Oh, so warm water swirling around makes you feel good? I'm Mattman." According to Kayti, this was a red flag that something was wrong.
"That Mattman thing was not something he did when he was sober. Mattman would come out when he was not sober and he felt kind of invincible," she said. "I was around when he was getting high, although I was not getting high with him, and when I would say maybe he should cool it a little bit with the drugs, he would say, 'No, I’m Mattman.'"

She also thinks spending time in the jacuzzi could have signaled he was abusing drugs.
"One time, his neighbor in Hollywood Hills found Matthew naked and high in his swimming pool," Kayti said. "I had to go over there and get him out of his neighbor’s pool. He had a thing with water when he was doing drugs. He always wanted to be in the pool or the Jacuzzi."
So far, Matthew's cause of death hasn't been determined.
At this point, his cause of death has been labeled deferred (which has been reflected on his death certificate, which was recently released) pending the results of his toxicology report. Any other information, including Kayti's thoughts, is just speculation as we wait for the investigation to be completed.
