During the 2025 Invictus Games in Vancouver, Canada, Prince Harry revealed that his son’s curiosity about landmines unexpectedly led them to a conversation about Princess Diana. When his 5-year-old son, Archie, asked about landmines, Harry found that he was able to talk about his late mother. From there, Archie became interested in seeing photos and videos of “Grandma Diana.”

In 1997, Princess Diana walked through a minefield to raise awareness.
Princess Diana’s landmine walk in Angola sparked conversations about landmines and put pressure on governments to take the issue seriously. Per the BBC, the images of her walk were especially powerful and sparked more awareness and advocacy globally. At the time, there were more than 15 million landmines in Angola as a result of civil war. The devices continue to kill and injure people in the country.
Prince Harry said his son asked him about landmines.
Not wanting to leave his son’s questions unanswered, Prince Harry found himself trying to explain landmines to his 5-year-old son. “You either shut it down straight away, which I would never do, or you engage in the conversation and you try to explain things,” Harry, 40, said during the Invictus Games. “Archie was asking about landmines, so I was talking about how some of these guys [Invictus Games participants] were blown up.”

He explained how he approached the conversation with Prince Archie.
“I think IEDs are probably a bit too much at this point, but I found myself talking to him about mines when he was 5 years old,” Harry continued.
The conversation later evolved into something “different” from what Harry had expected, as he realized he could also talk about his late mother during the conversation. “Interestingly, it gave me a chance to talk about my mum, his grandma, which I didn’t even really consider,” he explained.
The stories about Princess Diana were what really interested Archie.

Though the conversation started because of Archie’s curiosity about landmines, once Harry told Archie about his grandmother’s efforts to raise awareness about them, the boy wanted to learn more about her. “That became the outcome of the story for him,” Harry said, per People. “He wanted to see videos and photographs of his Grandma Diana out doing her thing for landmines all those years ago.
“It produced a very interesting conversation between me and him, different to what I thought it would be,” Harry added.
Previously, Harry said becoming a parent helped him feel closer to his late mother.
In 2022, during a virtual ceremony for the Diana Award, Prince Harry spoke about his late mother’s legacy. “I see my mum’s legacy when I look at my own children every day,” he said at the time.
In addition to Archie, Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, are also parents to Princess Lilibet, 3, and having children of his own has helped him to feel closer to his late mother. “Now, as a husband and a parent, my mother’s voice is even stronger in my life,” he said at the time.
