Princess Beatrice Speaks Out on Having Dyslexia & How She Will ‘Support’ Kids if They Do

When it comes to her children, Princess Beatrice is ready for whatever the future holds. This member of the royal family has been open about the fact that both she and husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi have been diagnosed with dyslexia, and during a new podcast appearance, Beatrice shared how she would handle it if she found out that their children have dyslexia as well. She and Edo are parents to daughter Sienna Elizabeth, 2, along with Edo’s son from a previous relationship, Christopher Woolf.

She is ready to support her kids.

While chatting with host Kate Griggs on the Lessons In Dyslexic Thinking podcast, Beatrice seemed prepared to handle it if she finds out her children have dyslexia like their parents do.

“As two dyslexics, we will be figuring out as parents whether or not our children have dyslexia and how best to support them,” she said. “But I think the most important thing that I can do, hopefully, if they are lucky enough to be dyslexic as well, then I feel really grateful that we can help them with resources.”

She believes all parents of children facing this diagnosis should feel supported.

As part of her royal platform, Beatrice works with the organization Made by Dyslexia, and it sounds like outreach to parents is a big part of her personal mission.

“Being a part of this community, I think has given me a bit more of an understanding and I’d really like that for all parents. So actually bringing the parents into the conversation, I think is really exciting because when a parent does happen to have the news that their child is dyslexic, right now, I don’t think they’re getting the right support,” she shared.

Beatrice said she loves speaking out about how she's navigated her diagnosis.

“Talking about this subject is my favorite thing, because as a dyslexic who’s navigating the kind of mad world we live in, I am so grateful and lucky to have a dyslexic thinking mindset, because it definitely pushes me a little bit further to try and solve some of these challenges and try and help as much as I can,” she said during the podcast.

Dyslexia “affects an individual’s ability to learn and process information which causes particular challenges in spelling, reading and memorizing facts,” People noted.

While speaking with Hello! while she was still expecting Sienna, Beatrice said she’d see her child having dyslexia as “a gift.”

“My husband’s also dyslexic so we’ll see whether we’re having this conversation in a couple of months’ time with a new baby in the house, but I really see it as a gift,” she said. “Even referring to it as a diagnosis I feel does a disservice to the brilliance of some of the most fantastic minds that we have. And I think just shifting the narrative a little bit toward something that is positive, that is impactful, I think can really help everyone.”

It sounds like Beatrice and Edo are well-equipped to handle whatever comes their way.

Growing up with a learning disorder such as dyslexia is never easy, but if it’s something that Sienna or Christopher face in the future, they are lucky to have parents who have walked down that road before and can help guide them. Beatrice is right — all parents should feel supported in helping their children navigate something that can be such a huge challenge for families.
