The Sex and the City reboot And Just Like That… takes place nearly two decades after the finale of the original HBO series — and that's led to some changes. For one, Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha, will not be returning for the new series. And two, the show's legendary costume designer isn't coming back either. Patricia Field styled the four women for the TV show and the movies, and she created some truly iconic Sex and the City looks in that time.
Patricia was never afraid to experiment with styles, colors, patterns, or accessories. Her work on the series helped cement it as one of the best ones to watch if you just really love clothes. Not everything she put together was a hit, and some of the looks are super dated now, but every single one of them is memorable.
For the new series, Patricia was unavailable — she's working on the Netflix show Emily in Paris. Instead, her protégée Molly Rogers will be stepping up to helm the reboot's costume team. Since she learned from the best, we bet that fashion magic will still be there, but we can expect to see new choices, too.
We can't wait, but since we have to, we might as well explore some of the best looks from the original Sex and the City wardrobes.
The Tutu
This outfit from the Sex and the City intro is ingrained in every fan's memory. We can totally picture Carrie Bradshaw getting splashed by a Manhattan puddle while wearing the fancy outfit. Turns out, though, that it wasn't quite as fancy as it looks. The tutu she wore cost just $5 at the time it was sourced for the show.
The Naked Dress
One of the first outfits we saw Carrie in was the infamous "naked dress" — a slinky, flesh-toned number. She wore it to the photo shoot for her bus ad and, as a result, she looked pretty near naked. But hey, she was writing about love and sex, so it worked. Side note: Do we all need a "naked dress" in our own wardrobes?
The Hats
The SATC women were often accessorized from head-to-toe, including many a trend-setting hat. Bucket hats are back in style again now, but Charlotte wore hers during the initial popularity of the item. We haven't yet seen Carrie's pageboy hat get quite the modern renaissance, but it's probably only a matter of time.
Double Headgear
Poor Miranda often got the short end of the fashion stick. Like who decided it was a good idea to put her character in a hoodie and a bucket hat? Don't get us wrong, it's now an absolutely iconic moment from the show, but not for all the right reasons. A fashion don't then and now.
The Overalls
Once again, poor Miranda. But you really can't talk about iconic Sex and the City outfits without mentioning Miranda's overalls. She was often portrayed on the series as not caring as much about fashion, and this is the kind of thing she would wear. Fortunately, based on the photos taken on the set of the reboot, her overall days are long gone.
The Midriff Belt
Patricia Field did not mess around with the SATC costumes. Instead of just staying on trend, she would sometimes try to create her own trends. Are we super glad this midriff belt trend didn't take off? Yes. But Carrie still managed to look amazing in the outfit. Sarah Jessica Parker has a gift.
The Newspaper Dress
Carrie's slinky Dior newspaper dress remains one of the most iconic pieces of the whole series. Newspaper print items are still popular today, but no one has ever done it quite like this. It was extra fitting that Carrie was a writer — she would be drawn to a patterned dress like this one.
Hot Colors
Patricia was never afraid to mix colors that you wouldn't ordinarily wear at the same time. This brightly colored outfit is in your face, but then again, so was Samantha. She absolutely would wear a pink jacket, red pants, and orange shoes all together like this just to stand out.
Pink Suit
Speaking of bright colors, Samantha totally slayed in this pink suit. The thing with her character was that she was a total boss, but she wasn't afraid of her femininity either. She could dress head-to-toe in pink and still be the one commanding all the attention in the room. It was inspiring to watch.
Showing Her Bra
Even something as simple as showing a bra strap used to be pretty taboo, but Carrie helped break down some of that fashion protocol in Sex and the City. You could often see her bra in outfits, like when she purposely showed off her black lingerie under her breezy top. Also, this bandana is so '90s, we love it.
Charlotte's Wedding Dress
We saw Charlotte get married twice over the course of Sex and the City, but we much prefer her second dress. By the time she married Harry, Charlotte was learning to loosen up, and her dress is representative of that. It's still plenty feminine, but it's also a bit flowier and looser than the standard strapless dress she wore for her first wedding to Trey.
The Oscar de la Renta Dress
When Carrie dated Russian artist Aleksander Petrovsky, he gifted her this designer Oscar de la Renta gown. The flounce of the skirt isn't our fave, but somehow Carrie pulls it off, as usual. And it's an Oscar de la Renta, so it's hard to complain that much about it. Definitely one of the standout fashion moments of the show.
Carrie's Versace Dress
Aleksander may have bought Carrie a designer gown, but he also stood her up in one, too. Carrie was expecting a night out in Paris, and she dressed in her Versace best — an amazingly over-the-top tiered gown. But Aleksander was so late that she passed out on the bed in the outfit. A true tragedy that she didn't get to show that one off.
Charlotte's Preppy Style
It's hard to pick just one favorite Charlotte outfit. Her whole sense of style was so her own, and while she didn't take the risks Carrie did, she always looked fabulous. She was particularly fond of preppy prints like plaid and argyle, and she loved a feminine pop of pink. It'll be interesting to see how her style grows in the reboot.
Carrie's Wedding Dress
It took a whole montage for Carrie to choose her wedding dress in the movie, and she tried on many gowns before settling on this voluminous Vivienne Westwood design. The entire outfit is iconic, from the dramatic sweetheart neckline on the dress to the giant feather headpiece she added. Perfectly Carrie. Too bad this particular wedding day didn't work out.
